Devin delivers: UD's Oliver beats Ole Miss with 3 at OT buzzer
Source: Dayton Daily News, OhioJan. 05--OXFORD, Miss. -- A season that began with a miracle play at the buzzer for the Flyers heads to Atlantic 10 play with another shot to remember.Devin Oliver banked in a 3-pointer with 0.3 seconds left in overtime to give Dayton an 83-80 victory over Mississippi on Saturday at Tad Smith Coliseum. William Faulkner himself, the Nobel Prize-winning author who lived in Oxford, wouldn't have scripted such an ending. Or maybe he would have. One of his famous works is "The Sound and the Fury." In a way, this shot had both."Oliver for 3," the Comcast Sports announcer said. "Got it! Off the window and in!"This was no mere 3-pointer. If it had been a Harlem Globetrotters game, Oliver might have earned four points. The senior forward from Kalamazoo, Mich., was about 5 feet behind the line."After I shot it, I called (bank shot)," Oliver said, "but not initially. I didn't care if it hit the rim 17 times and went it.""It was the prettiest bank shot I've ever seen," Dayton coach Archie Miller said.Had he shot an airball or fired the shot into the Ole Miss student section behind the basket, this would still have been the best performance by a Flyer this season. He hit 11-of-14 shots, scored 26 points, had seven rebounds, five assists and no turnovers.Of course, years from now, everyone will only remember the last shot, just as most people might forget all of the season-opening game against IPFW, except for the last-second 3 to win the game by Jordan Sibert.Just like that game, a turnover set the Flyers up for the final shot. This time, the Flyers got the ball with 5 seconds left after Ole Miss was called for an illegal screen -- Khari Price took a hard shot from Sebastian Saiz on that screen -- while trying to set up for the final shot.Dayton drew up a play for Vee Sanford, who missed what would have been a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer in the second half."Vee was supposed to come off of me and (Matt) Kavanaugh setting a screen and get it and go down and try to make a play," Oliver said. "Vee got caught going the other way. Heat of the moment, I guess. I saw Dyshawn (Pierre) was kind of stuck. I ran back and got the ball."Oliver split two defenders as he crossed half court. The ball left his hands with 2.1 seconds remaining."I probably could have gotten to the basket," Oliver said. "I felt the pull-up was the shot."Oliver bounced back down the court as Ole Miss in-bounded the ball with 0.3 seconds. Martavious Newby got off a shot from about three-quarters court, but it was off the mark. It would have counted."The thing that's disheartening," Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said, "is the last two possessions, we didn't get a shot."When the buzzer sounded, the celebration ensued. Price grabbed Oliver first, and then the rest of the Flyers mobbed him and rejoiced in a victory that gives them a 12-3 record heading into Atlantic 10 play. Judging by the Pomeroy ratings, this was Dayton's third-best win of the season. Ole Miss is ranked 78th. Gonzaga is 18th. California is 45th. The Flyers are 42nd.This was redemption for Oliver, who missed a shot in the final seconds against Southern California on Dec. 22 and left enough time on the clock for USC's Pe'Shon Howard to hit the game-winning 3-pointer."I've seen a lot of them at the end not go in for us," Miller said, "so we'll take that and obviously we'll feel good a迷你倉out it. I'm just happy we competed. We did fight. We've got a great group of guys that compete and battle."Of course, even before the shot fell, this was a great game. It featured 12 lead changes and 12 ties. Dayton's biggest lead was six points. Ole Miss once had a five-point lead. Neither of those leads lasted for long. The Flyers (12-3) trailed 80-76 with one minute left in overtime. A jumper by Pierre cut the deficit to two with 55 seconds left.A turnover by Ole Miss led to the next Dayton basket. Sanford took the ball the other way and missed a layup in traffic. He drew three Ole Miss defenders with him, however, and that left Kyle Davis open to grab the rebound and score on a putback, tying the game with 26 seconds left. It was the only shot and basket of the night for the freshman Davis, who played some important stints late in the game guarding Ole Miss star Marshall Henderson.Henderson hit 3-of-9 shots and scored 15 points. He didn't score at all for the first 21 minutes. Mostly, it was Jordan Sibert and Sanford on him then. While Dayton limited Henderson, the Rebel's second-leading scorer, Jarvis Summers, scored 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting."Our attention was really centered on Marshall Henderson," Miller said. "Eliminate the 3. We gave up some baskets due to that, which we knew was going to happen. I thought Jarvis Summers was as good a guard as we've guarded all season. To our kids' credit, when we needed a shot, we found a way."A back-and-forth, thrilling second half featured big plays all over the place. Dayton had its biggest lead, 51-45, with 13 minutes left. Ole Miss had a 61-56 lead with eight minutes to play, but Oliver scored five straight points on back-to-back possessions to tie it with 7:09 left.Henderson stole a pass and hit a 3-pointer with 3:20 left. Again Oliver responded with a 3-pointer on Dayton's next possession, tying the game with 2:55 to go.Oliver scored Dayton's last basket of the second half with 2:06 to play, a wide-open layup off an assist by Sanford. Summers tied the game moments later. Neither team scored in the last 1:50. Oliver forced a jump ball on a shot by Summers with 29 seconds left. Then Sanford missed a 3-pointer at the second-half buzzer.Dayton trailed 31-28 at halftime. Free throws were the big difference in the first half and, really, throughout the game. Ole Miss scored 10 of its first 17 points at the line and finished 28-of-36.The Flyers were 8-of-18 at the line until Pierre hit two free throws with 2:12 left in overtime. They shot exactly 50 percent for the third straight game.Pierre and Scoochie Smith each had 11 points for Dayton. Smith hit 3-of-5 3-pointers.Matt Kavanaugh and Sanford each scored 10. Kavanaugh played 31 minutes and hit 5-of-7 shots. It was another strong game for the senior from Centerville, who just a couple of weeks ago was languishing on the bench.Dayton shot 58 percent from the field in the second half and 48 percent in the game. The Flyers had 20 assists."Twenty assists on 31 made field goals is phenomenal," Kennedy said. ""Their ball movement was as good as I've seen in this building since Florida two years ago."-- NEXT GAMESt. Louis at Dayton, 11 a.m. Saturday, ESPN2, 1290, 96.5Copyright: ___ (c)2014 the Dayton Daily News (Dayton, Ohio) Visit the Dayton Daily News (Dayton, Ohio) at .daytondailynews.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesmini storage

我覺得這是mis-sight(錯誤見解)多於foresight(遠見)!」 mini storage

COPPER ALERT
Source: Albuquerque Journal, N.迷利倉M.Jan. 05--The copper that's being stripped from underground utilities in a string of damaging recent thefts is apparently not showing up in local recycling yards that follow the rules, although thieves can chop up or modify stolen copper to mask it.The thefts are causing recyclers, business owners and utilities in New Mexico a lot of concern."We want to catch them as bad as everyone else; it's giving us a black eye -- the industry -- but it's very difficult to catch them," said Bill Karr, general manager of Wise Recycling LLC in Albuquerque. The apparent uptick in copper thefts and even vehicle batteries means reputable recyclers are on high alert. The state requires those wanting to sell scrap metals to show identification. "Whenever someone brings in copper and stuff they have to bring an ID, that's a state law and that's been on the books for two or three years," said Brian Witt, owner of Capital Scrap Metals in Santa Fe.Both Witt and Karr said that a couple of things are probably keeping copper thieves away from local recyclers."The copper you are talking about, no, the IDs and stuff are discouraging the big amounts" that thieves might try and recycle, said Witt.Karr in Albuquerque agrees. "It's not showing up in the scrap yards. They are modifying it or taking it out of state is what police have told us." Copper thieves can strip the copper wire down or chop it up into smaller pieces to modify it, he said."These guys know what they are doing. They're smart, and we need to catch them in the act," said Karr. "It's very hard if the modify it ...I met with APD, and they are telling us the same thing. They are not seeing it in the (scrap) yards."Capt. Jerome Sanchez, head of investigations for the Santa Fe Police Department, says it's often difficult to identify stolen copper wiring. There is identifying coding on the insulation, but thieves strip it off.So where is the stolen local copper going?"I think it's people coming from out of town, not from Santa Fe, and taking it to another (scrap) yard somewhere else," he said. For scrap dealers, "It's kind of like the honor system," said Sanchez. "For every 10 people who go in (selling recycling metals) legitimately, there are maybe two who go in illegitimately."Last weekend, thieves stripped 320 feet of copper electrical wiring from a conduit on St. Michael's Drive in Santa Fe, knocking out power to two businesses. An attempted theft at the Santa Fe Children's Museum disrupted their power and knocked it out at a neighboring museum. There were also three copper thefts in Albuquerque the same weekend. In mid-December, Santa Fe's St. John's United Methodist Church, which is close to the museums, reported the theft of 200 feet of copper wire which caused a boiler to cool down to quickly and break. The damages cost the church $80,000."We are started to see an uptick of it (thefts) this last week," said Sanchez. "We are probably going to focus on it now."One national database called ScrapTheftAlert.com, operated by the Washington, D.C.-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, helps recyclers know what stolen metals might be coming their way."We get a report from ScrapTheftAlert and it tells us the description, the weight, what it was and what to be on the lookout for," said Karr, "We get a copy of the (driver's) license on eve迷你倉y transaction we do with copper."Karr believes the copper thieves have expertise beyond the average street thief. "These guys have to be pretty knowledgeable; they have got to have some electrical knowledge to not get hurt," he said. The thefts are of high concern to the Public Service Company of New Mexico, which donated $20,000 to CrimeStoppers statewide in November to offer rewards for apprehending copper bandits. In addition to the economic loss, the utility is concerned about the safety of the public or utility workers coming in contact with damaged, energized electrical equipment, said PNM spokeswoman Susan Sponar.Karr is working closely with authorities and is on a committee with PNM representatives to try and do something about the rash of copper thefts. About 165 Albuquerque businesses reported copper thefts to PNM in 2013 and Albuquerque police handled 300 copper thefts, according to Sponar.Getting tougher laws on the books would help, said Karr."It's very frustrating. We need to push for stiffer penalties," he said. "Now it's a misdemeanor. They have got to start charging them (thieves) with the damages to the infrastructure."The laws governing the thefts vary widely from state to state. In South Carolina and West Virginia the thefts are misdemeanors, but in Oklahoma and Hawaii they are felonies and, in Arkansas and Utah copper thieves can be held liable for the damage they cause during thefts. Some states, such as Minnesota, have stringent requirements for those dealing in scrap metals. The law there "requires video surveillance cameras or similar devices positioned to record or photograph a frontal view showing the face of each seller or prospective seller of scrap metal who enters the location," states the National Conference of State Legislatures website. The site outlines regulations for all states. Minnesota's law also requires the scrap dealer to video or photograph the seller's vehicle and vehicle license number.Karr said his company also videos sellers but is not required to. All information gathered from sellers is regularly uploaded into a state database, he said.In addition to verifying a prospective scrap metal seller's ID in New Mexico, state law also requires that dealers keep written records of purchases "of copper or brass material, bronze material, aluminum material in excess of ten pounds; or steel material in excess of one ton" said the State Legislatures website. The ScrapTheft website is a law enforcement tool to warn scrap dealers of thefts throughout the United states and Canada. In addition to the recording of the seller's ID information the organization recommends ways to track financial transactions after a dealer makes a purchase. Those include paying by check for a large transaction or paying by ATM.The organization also suggests refusing certain purchases unless accompanied by a letter of authorization. Those include materials generally sold by businesses but which are brought in by individuals, items used only by utilities or governments and "materials that might not be new but are clearly suspect" such as "20-foot lengths of copper downspouts tied to the top of a 1970 VW Beetle."Copyright: ___ (c)2014 the Albuquerque Journal (Albuquerque, N.M.)

Mob-trial prosecutors seek to bar defense claims
Source: The Philadelphia InquirerJan. 05--PHILADELPHIA -- Two of Philadelphia's top reputed mob dons have done their best during the last two months to paint the federal case against them as nothing more than the "cobbled together" result of 13 years of squandered investigatory resources. But if prosecutors have anything to say about it, they won't have a chance to make that argument again. As both sides prepare to make their final pitch to jurors Monday, government lawyers are seeking to bar defense attorneys for Joseph Ligambi and George Borgesi from repeating what they describe as inaccurate and improper claims. In disparaging the government's case against their clients, the defense team has all but asked jurors to "ignore the evidence" and "base [their] verdict on an emotional response" to the plight of the made men, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Frank Labor and John Han said in court filings Thursday. They described the defense claims as an "unabashed and highly improper appeal to juror sympathy."But lawyers for the two mob figures say that prosecutors have simply missed the point of their arguments."Despite 11,000 intercepts, 40 search warrants, and countless hours of visual surveillance over the course of more than a decade, the government has failed to develop a case," defense lawyer Michael F. Myers wrote in court filings Friday. "The point is lack of evidence."The eleventh-hour spat comes amid what has become a frequent defense theme throughout Ligambi's retrial on racketeering conspiracy charges.Prosecutors allege that Ligambi, 74, oversaw the mob's wide-ranging illegal gambling and loan-sharking rackets across the Philadelphia area and that Borgesi, his nephew and purported consigliere, stood by his side. If convicted, both men face potential life sentences.Defense lawyer Edwin Jacobs Jrmini storage has repeatedly depicted Ligambi as the victim of an FBI witch-hunt and derided the charges against him as picayune when compared with the violence-filled cases that brought down the city's previous mob dons."Why are these charges here at all?" he asked during his opening statement to jurors Nov. 7. "The federal government had to charge something to justify the enormous allocation of government time and resources and money."He added: "This case is a misuse of 13 years of investigation [of Ligambi], which cleared us of wrongdoing."For his part, Borgesi, 50, has centered his defense on his prior conviction on racketeering charges. He was sentenced to federal prison in 2000 and has remained behind bars ever since. The government contends he continued to run illegal rackets from prison. But his lawyer, Christopher Warren, has maintained that Borgesi learned his lesson the first time and is no longer criminally involved with his mob brothers."You don't keep getting to lock somebody up again and again for the same thing," he said in November. "He has been trying to get out and back to his family -- that's family with a lowercase F."In filings Thursday, prosecutors insisted that, Warren's portrayal of his client notwithstanding, he is guilty of the charges against him."Nothing could be further from the truth," Myers responded on Borgesi's behalf. "Instead, defense counsel merely explained why a so-called career criminal like Borgesi would 'hang up the towel.' "U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno is expected to issue a ruling before the trial resumes Monday on whether the defense can reprise those arguments.jroebuck@phillynews.com215-925-2649@jeremyrroebuckCopyright: ___ (c)2014 The Philadelphia Inquirer Visit The Philadelphia Inquirer at .philly.com Distributed by MCT Information Services儲存

Art collector Mera Rubell tours 37 Baltimore art studios in 36 hours
Source: The Baltimore SunJan.self storage 05--Mera Rubell -- a 70-year-old formerly penniless Jewish Russian refugee turned Head Start teacher turned hotel mogul turned art collector extraordinaire -- is the kind of person who just naturally acquires an entourage. For example, a recent tour of Baltimore's art scene began quietly at 8:40 a.m. with just one car and six sleepy occupants. Eight hours later, the caravan that pulled up outside the Charles Village home of paper artist Cara Ober had grown to three vehicles containing at least 14 people, including four reporters and photographers. The throng kept growing because Mera, who will permit herself to be addressed by no other name, embarks on off-the-wall adventures that also are lots of fun. On a late October weekend, she's visiting the studios of 37 Baltimore artists who were chosen by lottery from a pool of about 150. The whirlwind tour, which takes place in just 36 hours, was inspired by a similar marathon she conducted of Washington studios in 2009.During her Baltimore visit, Mera was quietly evaluating the artists for inclusion in a group show she was arranging in a prestigious Manhattan gallery -- though the painters and sculptors didn't know that yet. They thought they were being considered for "Select 2014," an exhibit sponsored by the Washington Project for the Arts that opens Feb. 27, and for which Mera is one of eight guest curators. They were indeed being evaluated for the Northern Virginia show. But that wasn't the headline."Shhhh," Mera says. "Don't tell them. It's supposed to be a surprise."(Later, photographer Alessandra Torres would write in an email that upon receiving the phone call informing her that she was among the 19 artists selected for both shows, first she screamed, and then she started laughing. "The entire experience is like an art fairy tale," Torres wrote, "just like the movie version of 'Great Expectations.' ")Not that the artists needed an incentive. They would gladly open their studios at any hour for the Rubells. Mera, her husband, Don, and their two grown children have put together what they describe as one of the largest private holdings of contemporary art in the world. The couple began purchasing art in the mid-1960s when Mera was a Head Start teacher and Don was in medical school. They allocated 25 percent of Mera's then-weekly salary of $100 to buy original art -- and still spend roughly the same proportion of their income on contemporary paintings and sculptures. They were among the earliest collectors of such future superstars as Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince. Now the Rubell Family Collection is housed in a 45,000-square-foot museum in Miami, and the couple divide their time between Florida and New York.Mera's energy is irresistible. Arms akimbo, she enthuses past all obstacles. The cookies and pastries that artists put out for each 20-minute studio visit are abundant and homemade. They satisfy an appetite the visitors didn't even know they had -- just like the art hanging on the studio walls.Who wouldn't want to tag along?Jane Deering, the owner of a California gallery bearing her name, is along on the tour ... well, just because. "You are magical," she tells Mera. "You know how to put these artists right at ease.""Oh, stop it," Mera replies.Deering may be on to something. There's definitely a whiff of a modern-day fairy godmother about Mera -- though this godmother sports a black Panama hat and pink-rimmed shades. She loves, loves artists and radiates excitement and pleasure when in their company."Wow!" she says after visiting Rachel Rotenberg's Northwest Baltimore studio and marveling at her muscular wood sculptures. "Oh, my God! That was some visit. People have no idea what's going on here in Baltimore."An hour later, she's in Gary Kachadourian's studio across town, admiring his meticulous black-and-white, life-size drawings of humble objects. Kachadourian's posters, which begin at $6 for a sketch of a chicken bone lying on the sidewalk, bear out one of Mera's favorite sayings: "Everyone can afford to own an original work of art."Impulsively, she breaks her own rule."This trip isn't supposed to be about buying," she says. "But I can't resist."Mera opens up her wallet -- and everyone else in the group scrambles to do the same. But no one who has acquired the Rubells' reputation for discernment can afford to be uncritical. When Mera judges that the situation warrants tough love, she dispenses it.For instance, she advises one artist to focus more on refining her vision and less on building an audience. "The journey to become a great artist is long," Mera says, "and it's still ahead of you."But overall, Mera thinks Baltimore's art scene is an undiscovered treasure, and she thinks outsiders should know about it. When Mera gets a strong feeling 迷你倉hat something should be done -- and she has many, many such strong feelings -- she acts. It takes her less than 72 hours after the tour ends to set up the show at Manhattan's Marianne Boesky gallery, which has a reputation for spotting up-and-coming artists on the verge of a breakthrough.Mera knows people who know people. Her conversation includes anecdotes about Barbra Streisand (whom Mera met in a maternity ward as she was delivering her son), the filmmaker John Waters (they had lunch just the other day) and the Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei. Pop icon Andy Warhol was a close family friend. But her greatest affinity isn't with the rich and famous; it's with struggling artists who, like her, have led a vagabond existence. As she tells Rotenberg:"I grew up in a family where you put your belongings in a bundle on a stick."Mera's family fled their native Poland in 1939 after her father came home one day from the front, where he was stationed with the Polish army. Because he was blond and blue-eyed, Mera says, no one knew he was Jewish. Mera's father convinced his wife and nine brothers and sisters that they had to leave the country that very night, before the Nazis crossed the Polish border. He tried to persuade Mera's mother's family to come along. They demurred, reasoning that the Nazis wouldn't hurt mothers with young children."Two of them survived Auschwitz," Mera says. "Three did not."Mera was born in 1943 in Tashkent, the capital city of what is now Uzbekistan, and spent her childhood in refugee camps in Russia and Germany. When she arrived in New York at age 12, she didn't know a word of English.Of necessity, she began spending a lot of time in the library and proved to be a quick study, acquiring not just a fluency in English but an authentic New York accent to go with it. After enrolling in Brooklyn College to study psychology, she says, she began sitting at the same library table as an attractive medical student."For three months, this gorgeous guy sat across from me every day, and never said a word," she says. "Then, one day he asked me if I wanted to take a walk. I did, and the first words out of his mouth were, 'Will you marry me?' "Eventually, she did.The couple collected art steadily while Don became a gynecologist and Mera got into commercial real estate. They raised two children: Jason, who works in the family business, and Jennifer, a New York-based artist whose portrait as a child was sketched by Warhol. Another close -- and famous -- family member was Donald's brother, Steve Rubell, who was best known for co-founding the discotheque Studio 54. Steve left his estate to Don and Mera when he died in 1989 of complications from AIDS.In 1993, the couple transformed a former federal Drug Enforcement Administration warehouse in Miami into an art museum, and a few years later bought their first hotel. A pattern soon emerged: One of the Rubells would a venture into a new city while investigating a building purchase and begin championing the local arts community. Sometimes, as in Miami, it worked the other way around. In Washington, for instance, the couple bought a former Best Western Hotel in 2002 and transformed it into the uber-hip Capital Skyline Hotel. For the past several years, they've been renovating a long-closed high school on the District of Columbia's southwest side into what will become a satellite museum for the Rubell Family Collection. In Baltimore, the Rubells are in the midst of renovating the 85-year-old Lord Baltimore Hotel. Mera has big plans for both the hotel and local art community, and she unveils one of them during an impromptu bull session while visiting Ober's Charles Village studio.Instead of a standard hotel gift shop, the Lord Baltimore may house a small gallery selling original works by local painters, ceramists, sculptors. It will be called "The Anyone Can Afford to Own an Original Work of Art Gift Shop."But why stop there?Someone suggests that the small refrigerators in each of the hotel's 440 rooms could contain original artworks instead of drinks.Everyone laughs, and Mera runs with the idea:"We could put a piece of art inside," she says -- and it seems she's only partly joking. "You could buy it or not buy it. If it disappears from the room after you check out, it goes on your bill."mary.mccauley@baltsun.comIf you go"Baltimore Artists + WPA + Mera Rubell = LOVE" runs from Saturday through Jan. 18 at Marianne Boesky Gallery, 118 E. 64th St., New York. marianneboeskygallery.com or 212- 680-9889.The Washington Project for the Arts' exhibit, "Select 2014," will be on view Feb. 27-March 21 at Artisphere, 1101 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, Va. wpadc.org or 202-234-7103.Copyright: ___ (c)2014 The Baltimore Sun Visit The Baltimore Sun at .baltimoresun.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉將軍澳
