Source: The Brownsville Herald, TexasOct.self storage 11--No one was injured Wednesday when an alert school bus driver extinguished an engine-compartment fire similar to one that destroyed a Brownsville Independent School District bus last week.At about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday all 30 Rivera High School students on board bus No. 447 were evacuated after the bus experienced a fire in its engine compartment at FM 802 and South Padre Island Highway, BISD officials said. The fire was similar to one last Friday in which 29 Porter High School students were evacuated from bus No. 528 at 14th Street and the Expressway frontage road before flames that began in the engine compartment reduced the bus to a smoldering shell. The two buses were of similar make and model and manufactured by the International Corp. BISD transportation administrators contacted the company after Friday's fire and again on Wednesday. The company said it was sending a team of product integrity specialists to Brownsville on Monday to inspect four similar buses which have been removed from BISD service. The bus involved in Wednesday's incident was a 2005 model while the one involved in last Friday's incident was a 2002 model, officials said. The company will inspect 100 additional buses that are manufacture迷利倉 by International but are of a different make and model, BISD said."We take it very seriously; we're not delaying at all," district spokeswoman Drue Brown said. "We're taking quick and prompt action to protect our students and employees."The two bus fire incidents come just as BISD is upgrading its bus fleet. At the end of October, BISD is scheduled to take delivery of 42 new regular buses and 18 special needs buses manufactured by Thomas Built Buses Inc. The 60 new buses are part of a $6.4 million bus fleet upgrade. Another 12 buses were ordered this week, the district said. The drivers in both incidents will be commended at the Nov. 5 school board meeting for taking quick action and protecting students' lives, said Antonio Juarez, BISD assistant superintendent for human resources. He added that campus administration at the two schools made counselors available if needed after the incidents.BISD's bus fleet comprises more than 300 buses which provide transportation to some 27,000 students, well over half of the district's enrollment.glong@brownsvilleherald.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Brownsville Herald (Brownsville, Texas) Visit The Brownsville Herald (Brownsville, Texas) at .brownsvilleherald.com Distributed by MCT Information Services自存倉

Source: Bangor Daily News, MaineOct.self storage 11--Last year, Tanja Hollander did something she had dreamed about doing for nearly 20 years: She quit her day job as a paralegal to focus on her art."It was a scary thing. Scary, and exhilarating," said Hollander, of Auburn. "I have a mortgage, after all. Parts of me wish I'd done it earlier, because once you cut off your day job you really have to figure out how to survive. I'm really hustling."Hollander, a photographer known for her "Are You Really My Friend?" project, is one of a minority of artists and artisans in Maine who make art their full-time job. Most can't sustain themselves financially from their craft alone. They work as teachers, editors, coaches and bartenders, on top of spending as much time as they can in the studio or on stage. Most artists would tell you they wish art was their full-time business, but in Maine -- a state that's highly seasonal, mostly rural and often dependent upon the spending habits of out-of-staters -- is it feasible? Can you make a living as an artist in Maine? Why it's good to live in MaineJulie Richard, executive director of the Maine Arts Commission, noticed when she started in her position last year that Maine's art industry is different from the rest of the country. Her organization gives Maine artists more than $100,000 in grants each year -- some as small as $500, a handful as large as $10,000."The arts are really enmeshed in the community," said Richard, who has been part of the arts community in places such as New York, South Carolina and Arizona. "Almost every town in Maine has artists front and center who are integral to the life of the community. There's a history of that here. It's something that's been true for a very long time."There's a reason people such as Winslow Homer, Alex Katz and Edna St. Vincent Millay chose to live in Maine, not a big city. Its beauty, people and pace of life inspire.According to Census Bureau data from 2000, Mainers employed in the "Creative Workforce" -- defined as those self-employed in fields including graphic design, photography, visual arts, architecture and performance -- constitute about 2.7 percent of the state's overall workforce.Dan Capaldi is a Portland musician and composer, with a solo project called Sea Level and a duo called the Soft Bullets with his England-based collaborator. By day, he freelances scoring for commercials and TV. By night, he makes his own music."Living in Maine, you are really free to do whatever you want and make your own decisions," said Capaldi. "You are forced to be creative to get yourself out there. There isn't the crazy population of New York or another huge city, or the mass of venues or other showcases, so you have to do it all yourself. It's very liberating."Another of Maine's biggest positives is its affordability.Hollander, who appreciates Maine's low cost of living, spends a large percentage of the year traveling and visits New York City on a regular basis to connect with collectors and gallery owners."Does paying four times the rent in New York that you would in Maine balance having to drive or fly there once a month? I don't know," said Hollander. "I do know that it's not as hard to stay connected nowadays. It's not as important today to be living right in the middle of it all."The Internet has changed the industry. Twenty years ago, it would have been nearly impossible for someone to get their work out to a large audience without living in a big city. Now, with a website and a strong social media presence, anyone can see an artist's work."Before, as a musician, you had to have a video on MTV, or be on Ed Sullivan or something. There were so few ways to get exposure," said Capaldi. "Now, there's countless outlets. You can be your own boss. That's a relatively new thing."The challengesTechnology has created a more level playing field, but much of Maine is still isolated from a lot of the money that keeps artists afloat. The only time that money really starts to flow into the state is in the summer, when the tourists arrive.Susan Cooney is a Belfast artist who creates detailed graphite drawings of the Maine coast. She is one of many Belfast residents who operate a studio in the art-filled downtown where summer tourists have a pivotal role in an artist's succesmini storage -- or failure."It's interesting how things change. In 2006, I had great sales, and then it fell off after the economic crash in 2008," said Cooney. "Then it went back up. This year it feels like the customer base really has changed. The people that are coming through Belfast aren't necessarily buying art ... our art walks have dropped off. I don't know if that's a microcosm of Maine or if it's a Belfast thing, but it's definitely changed."The whims of the art-buying public can sometimes be so capricious that artists have no choice but to fold. Cooney's neighbor in Belfast, photographer Charles Dufour, closed his gallery this fall after sales fell to an unsustainable level. Randy Colbath, a Howland-based artist who creates imaginative sculptures out of Maine wood, decided to leave the state he has called home all his life and move to Florida, where the market is stronger."I don't think I could ever make enough money in this area to sustain myself," said Colbath. "I've been traveling all over New England and the New York City metropolitan area doing art fairs for the last couple of years, traveling too far for too little."Gorham-based couple Barry and Karen Dodd -- who write, direct and produce with several collaborators the Maine-made Web series "Ragged Isle" -- have received plenty of accolades for their work. Its third and final season premieres online on Halloween of this year. Last year they launched a website called The Entertainment Experiment, a forum for Maine-based digital storytellers to showcase their work.To make it all work, however, they've had to tap their own finances."We've stretched our pocketbooks as far as they can go to make our first series," said Barry Dodd, a Waldo County native and New England School of Communications graduate. "There are always crowd funding opportunities but that's hardly a sustainable business model, and it's tough to keep going back to the fans to beg for money."Even with a day job -- Cooney is the swim coach at the Waldo County YMCA, Colbath worked as a marine engineer, both the Dodds work as editors and producers -- it is hard to make art and maintain a studio."Most of us work other jobs. That's just the reality. Some people teach their art, some don't work in their fields at all," said Cooney. "But almost everyone has to do something else. My husband works too ... I worry that studio rent will go up, and the market will dry up, and I don't know where we'll be."What can be done?Hollander believes that while some challenges Maine artists face are unique -- the seasonality, the rural isolation some may experience -- the majority of the difficulties could be found by artists anywhere.Selling enough art to make a living appears to be the largest stumbling block to artists of any stripe."I think the biggest thing is that we need to get people to think about buying art," said Hollander. "There are not a lot of collectors of contemporary work in Maine. I hope that will change. I think things like First Friday [Art Walk] in Portland are breeding people that value the creative economy and artists of all kinds. I think things like Buy Local have made people think about where their food comes from -- why can't we do the same thing with art?"It also behooves artists to become skilled beyond their craft: Marketing, networking, knowledge of tax code and other business skills are crucial to making creativity a viable source of income."You've got to be able to market yourself, make your own videos, be your own boss. You can't do it without being able to do a lot of different things," said Capaldi. "You have to have some kind of business sense."Maine College of Art offers workshops and training sessions in marketing, grant writing, contract law and other areas for its students. Groups such as the Etsy Maine Team have formed to promote Maine-made crafters and artisans, while festivals like the Portland Fringe Festival, held each June, offer opportunities to see Maine-based theater and performance groups and allow the artists within those groups to network."It's complicated," said Capaldi.

Source: Standard-Examiner, Ogden, UtahOct.mini storage 11--Some folks are certain they'll find evidence of ghosts on the Ogden Ghost Tours -- and others may think the whole premise is crazy. But believers and nonbelievers alike are welcome on the bus tours that begin Saturday, Oct. 12, with drive-bys of numerous reportedly haunted Ogden locations."I would say you don't have to be into ghosts to enjoy a really good ghost story," says Kristen Clay, a Brigham City storyteller who organizes the annual event. Some people bring cameras in hopes of snapping photographs of orbs, Clay says, but adds, "Then we have people that the believers drag along with them, and even they seem to have a good time."The bus and walking tours are part of several upcoming Halloween-related events.Ogden Ghost ToursThree different tours -- by bus or on foot -- showcase the wealth of spirits in Ogden."We get new stories constantly; through the year, we try to keep up with the hauntings and activities," says Clay, who, along with other members of the Utah Storytelling Guild, guide the tours in downtown Ogden. All of the tales are rich in details about the people while they were living, Clay says, as well as after they transitioned into "ghosthood."Some scare-seekers may prefer riding around inside a warm bus; others opt for the "up-close-and-personal" nature of walking, "looking in the windows, standing on the street," she says. The bus tour, which begins across the street from the water tower at Union Station, 2501 Wall Ave., drives by the Ogden City Cemetery, the Ben Lomond Hotel and other sites. The "Wicked West" walking tour starts at the Pearl Milk Tea Club, 110 Historic 25th Street; the "Eerie East" walking tour begins at the courtyard south of Peery's Egyptian Theater, 2415 Washington Blvd.Storyteller Janine Nishiguchi says Ogden is rife with ghost tales, and they are entertaining, even if we don't understand "why a ghost wants to stay around.""It's something we don't understand and so we're a little bit afraid of it as a whole. ... It makes us want to learn more about it," says Nishiguchi, of Bountiful, who leads bus and walking tours.Participants are encouraged to bring cameras and take pictures, which may reveal orbs or sights not visible to the naked eye, Nishiguchi says. If you spot something in a photo, you might think, "Wow -- there's that energy, we are surrounded by someone from another realm," she says. And because there are so many of these ghost stories, Nishiguchi says, some folks cannot help but think, "How can they not be true?"* Hours: Bus tours: 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 12-26, and 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Oct. 25.

Source: Jordan Times, AmmanOct. 11--SINGAPORE -- Businesses in Jordan can retain their customers and improve their products and services through having a presence on social networks, an expert at International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) said Thursday."Having a presence on social networking sites is no more an option. Businesses that want to survive and grow need to take social networks seriously and interact with users," Pranatharthi Haran, ASEAN executive of web experience and social business at IBM Software Group, told The Jordan Times on the sidelines of IBM InterConnect 2013 conference, which attracted more than 2,500 delegates and experts in the field of business and IT from across the world.Business in Jordan, whether in the banking, services, insurance, retail, healthcare, ICT and other sectors, should have strategies to interact with their clients and audience through social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, he said."In countries, where Internet penetration is on the rise and social media usage is high, it is a must for businesses to pay attention to what is happening on social networks and what is being said about their services and products," Haran added."Social media networks help businesses get feedback on their services and products. If businesses professionally and constantly interact with customers on their Facebook page or Twitter account and reply to their queries they will be able to create a digital community of customers, which will benefit their business grow," he continued.According to the expert, people nowadays resort to their Facebook friends' list, which is their trusted network of friends and community, to get their feedback on certain restaurants, products and shops. And in many cases they say their frank opinion about goods they bought or places they have been to without any restrictions."Therefore, businesses that have an active presence on social media are referred to and their reputation and the services they provide is easily rated on social media," he said.In Jordan, where Internet penetration reached 70 per cent by the end of June 2013 with some 4.641 million users, social media usage, especialmini storagey Facebook, is on the rise, according to the Arab Advisors Group.A recent survey by Harris Interactive Inc. on behalf of Northwestern University in Qatar, showed that 94 per cent of Internet users in Jordan use social media sites, mainly Facebook. There are more than 2.7 million Facebook users in Jordan."By interacting with customers on social media networks, businesses can address questions by their clients. If there are negative comments on their services and products, they can also benefit from this data to enhance their work," Haran indicated. "Social media is a game changer and businesses should think of social networks as an opportunity to increase their audience."Scott Hebner, VP, social business solutions, echoed similar remarks."The way people rate things nowadays differ from it was in the past. A person can ask his list of friends about a certain shop or products and gets a feedback in seconds," Hebner told The Jordan Times in an interview Thursday."There is no excuse for any business not to use social media anymore. Overwhelming majority of the world's population have mobiles and use social media around the clock," said Hebner. In a session Thursday on "How Social Businesses are Driving Results", experts stressed the importance of social media to companies of all sizes.Alistair Rennie, general manager of Collaboration Solutions at IBM, indicated that major companies around the world are using social media to get feedback and improve their services and products accordingly."Engagement with customers through social networks is crucial and is the key for long-term success," Rennie stressed during the session, where experts also looked into how social networks can help increase employees' productivity and performance. The 3-day conference, held under the title or a "New Era of Smart", included several sessions on cloud computing, big data and analytics, latest IT trends, the future of mobile applications, how enterprises can become smarter by adopting new technologies, among others.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) Visit the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) at .jordantimes.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesself storage
