self storage

Source: Cape Cod Times, Hyannis, Mass.儲存倉Oct. 13--Pairpoint Glass opened in South Boston in 1837 as the Mt. Washington Glass Co.The company, which now has two Cape Cod locations, has been owned by Tom Fiocco since 2004.The dual responsibility of running a factory as well as a decorative glass shop could make many people think twice before igniting the furnace flames. But not Fiacco. While he had never worked in the world of decorative art before, he said he "immersed" himself in his business and found a niche in the market that captured "both beauty and business."What's the most important thing your business does?We provide people with something beautiful to bring into their home -- an object that they will get a lot of joy out of seeing. Say someone is feeling depressed -- we have a beautiful window ball that you can hang from your window. The sun will hit it every day, and it's going to sparkle, and it's going to put a smile on your face. I really have a lot of fun here and a lot of repeat customers come into the store just to see what's new. I love being able to provide a great experience like that for them. Everybody walks the entire shop and then they always circle back to what they want. And, almost always, people will find the perfect piece for their home or for someone else. How long have you been in business?Pairpoint Glass is recognized as the oldest glass company in America. The company itself has been open since 1837 but moved to the Cape in 1970 from New Bedford. We've been at this location since then. I purchased the company in 2004 because I was interested in buying a company that was well-established, had a great brand name, and was manufacturing. If you think about it, glass blowing is not a rising industry, but we have a great niche market and I think the products that we produce are the best that's out there right now. There are studios in the area but those are one-man shops. This is a factory and we produce thousands and thousands of pieces in a given year. There is no place that rivals us "? on a factory level. We don't compete with the studios and they don't compete with us.What did you do before? Before owning Pairpoint, I always worked for absentee managers. I was the guy they sent in to troubleshoot a company. What I would do is build these companies to a point where the owner wanted to sell them -- or when it was just my turn to walk out. There was one company where we did computer parts, the second was sheet metal, the third was homeopathic drugs, so there was really no relevance or connection to the items. So, for the last assignment, I thought, "Why don't I just do this myself versus doing it for someone else?" I raised my family in Reading, Mass., but my wife loved the Cape so I started looking for a business to buy here. I had experience in business and it is my theory that if you get focused, you learn about the business, you immerse yourself in it for a few years, then it can be a success. So I took a chance and I bought this company in 2004. I've always run factories, but the products I sell now are decorative art glass -- things that people bring into their homes to make them feel good. So it was different then anything I had ever done before. It took a few years to learn the market and I kept thinking I had it, but then I realized that I am still learning. You end up learning something every day.How big is your staff?I probably have about 12 employees combined from both the Sagamore and the Mashpee Commons locations. Mashpee has two employees because there is no factory there, but in the summer that goes up to four people. As far as the factory here in Sagamore, all the guys in there are artists. In order to become a glass blower, you also need to be an artist. And everything my guys make, they know it is going to end up in the store. Once they are done with their pieces, the art comes up here and it goes into quality control where we make sure it's right and then my retail people put it all together inside the store. My season starts in April and then every month after is bigger than the one before because the bus tours come in. And then we get busy again when you get towards Christmas. In January and February, we work on building our inventory and then we start all over again. Year after year, it is consistent. How has the market changed since your business started? In 2008, when the economy crashed, we took a big-time hit. There are two sides of my business. There are the two retail shops, which did well, but then there are the shipments that I send to other retail shops. In that one year, I lost 50 percent of those sales. So how did I co迷你倉最平e with that? Unfortunately, I had to lay a couple of people off. But then we also got a lot smarter about the way we do things. We went to four 10-hour days instead of five eight-hour days. You can imagine the gas bill with all these ovens, so that helped us out a lot. We also changed the materials we used. And then I just worked like heck to replace the business that I lost, and in 2012, I surpassed my sales for 2008. So, I'm back where I should be. It took four or five years and it was the most frightening time of my life. But, you know, I was never alone. All my friends in business were going through the exact same thing. And although there was no formal support group, I got through that time by talking and knowing I wasn't alone. What are your plans for your business' future? Most of my business comes from the New England area. In the future, I will be looking to expand the retail side of things nationally. At the same time, I am always trying to get more (tour) buses and more tourists to come to the area. I have also hired a super marketing person who has done a great job with social media. A year ago, I may have felt different about (social media), but there are just too many people with their cellphones in their hands and they won't do anything without checking their cellphones. They are on them to find where they are going, what they should wear, to find out how food is at a restaurant. So now we are on Facebook and we will be updating daily with new products and videos. We are also trying to redo our website. So, in essence, I'm trying to get in people's faces as much as I can. And no retirement plans. I am here at the shop at 6 a.m. every day. I have fun and I love coming to work. That will continue. What's the best thing about having a business on the Cape? That would be the location. The tourists and your consumers are here every year. No matter how depressed you get in April and you start to worry, you find that they always come back. People love the Cape and it's a great demographic to have every year. Plus, I don't really need to advertise. Once they come, all I need to do is find a way to get them in the store. But that's my job and I make sure it gets done. What's the biggest challenge to having a business on the Cape? That would be trying to keep the business open 12 months a year when you have a business that really runs for eight months. But, to contrast that, we have business that carries us through the slow months. We do all the awards for the Boston Marathon, as well as the Deutsche Bank Classic. For the marathon, we partner with Long's Jewelers and Bob Rottenberg. There are a total of 120 trophies given out, and besides the top two awards that are made out of sterling silver, we make the rest. That's a really great contract to have. We also probably do golf awards for 50 percent of the golf clubs on Cape Cod. If they are going to give out trophies, they come to us. All of these things combined fill in the slower months. What's your most memorable moment with this business?I do a lot of custom paperweights, and this one time, a good customer of mine came in. He and his wife had been great customers of mine for years. Unfortunately, his wife had passed. He came in and told me they had always collected sea glass on the beach together. He had a bag of sea glass and he wanted me to custom-make paperweights out of the sea glass for all of her six siblings. And, you know, it's something as simple as a paperweight, but it was important to him and special for his wife. It was an honor to do that for him -- and it's that type of reward that you get just working for your customers. What advice do you have for someone starting out in business on the Cape? You really need to immerse yourself in the business and in the community. Learn about your business before you make changes or even try to make changes. You can save yourself a lot of time and energy by understanding your market. I would suggest business school also. The books are great and they teach you structure. Then, go work for somebody. The books don't teach you how to handle customers. And that right there is the name of the game. You learn what gets your customers excited and, at the same time, what can get them to spend money. Once you piece that together and figure out how to relate to your customers, you will learn your business. Don't make your business something it's not and don't ask your customers to buy something they don't want.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, Mass.) Source: The Montana Standard, ButteOct.迷你倉 13--With barely a dozen practices under their belt, the Montana Tech women's basketball team opened its 2013-14 season Saturday night against a team with a bit more time to prepare for this planned date. Not only did MacEwan University out of Edmonton come in with seven games under its belt, the host Orediggers would wheel out a new-look team with enough cosmetic changes to the roster it would make the doctors from "Nip/Tuck" jealous they weren't given the bill.Regardless, the Tech women showed grit and just enough clutch offensive play to pull away for a 58-50 victory to get the DeAnn Craft era off to a winning start and win their first game at the HPER Complex this season."Those first wins are always memorable, but it's that group of girls I get to teach and coach every day that have fabulous attitudes and have embraced the system," Craft said. "It feels like a weight off of your shoulders."The first-game jitters out of the way,the players enjoyed a chance to play together."We did really well for coming together so quickly, it was fun, really fun," junior post Kelsey DeWit said. "It's so much to play with these girls and our chemistry is coming together as a team. This is the most fun team I've played on."Butte High graduate and junior transfer from North Idaho College Kabri Emerson scored the Orediggers' first points of the season on two free throws.Despite all the new faces and the lack of in-season legs, one thing that came across early was that the Tech team had found some rhythm with one another as the ball began to whip around the perimeter with periods of smooth play.Even though the Griffins had more playing time under their belts this fall, Tech stayed with them and the game was tied 11-11 at the 10:21 mark despite the Oredigger shooting form having not found a consistent stroke to that point.Tech built a 16-11 lead on DeWit's layup with just over nine minutes left before halftime. Then freshman and Butte High alum Hattie Thatcher found Sophia Baetz alone for a cascading three-pointer and Tech led 19-13 with eight minutes to go.The Griffins would take advantage of Tech's tiring legs as the half would down and a 12-2 run would put them up 25-21 with 3:35 before halftime, forcing Craft to call timeout.A well-run offensive set would lead to a conventional three-point play by DeWit in the post and Tech trailed 28-26 at the 1:43 mark.Mandy Machinal's trey would put Tech up 31-30 and they would head into the intermission down 34-31 on a late Bayan Kurd triple of her own.Tech came out rested and feeling the flow as they came out shooting better and thanks to some outside shooting by Machinal and post play by Emerson the Orediggers were suddenly up 45-36 with 12 minutes left to play.Tech's lead increased to 10 before MacEwan made a run to pull within 48-45. mini storage Victoria Turner triple would give the Orediggers some breathing room at 51-45 with 6:55 left in the game. Both teams chilled a bit as the game wore down but the Tech focus and intensity stayed up as they would slowly put the win in the bank.Tech held MacEwan to 23 percent shooting in the second half and forced 20 turnovers, Machinal led Tech with 14 points while Turner chipped in with 11 points. Emerson and DeWit each had nine-point, seven-rebound outputs. Thatcher played just under eight minutes and recorded two rebounds and an assist, Emerson was pleased to be back home and she also enjoyed the play of Thatcher.Tech shot 10-18 on 3-pointers."I love being home and having my family here," Emerson said. "There was a big group of them here and they are always supportive. I can't ask for anything more than to have my family here to watch me."Hattie did really well for her first college game, she was really focused," Emerson said, "She's a Thatcher, it's hard not to bring the spice with a Thatcher."Craft liked what she saw considering so much of what Tech wants to do has been left in the playbook and yet to find run on the practice floor."We challenged a few players at halftime," Craft said. "They have a few marquee kids that by design get touches and we wanted to make that more difficult. We really shut down their guards and got more deflections and that was a big part of it. We only have our half court man in right now. I would have liked to have trapped at times, but that's what the next three weeks (of practice) are for. What I found most importantly out tonight was that we are a tough team."Montana Tech 58, MacEwan University 50MACEWAN -- Kemdall Lydon 4-9 0-0 10, Bayan Kurd 3-12 0-0 9, Megan Wood 6-13 5-8 18, Paige Knull 3-6 0-0 6, Kelly Fagan 2-6 0-0 4, Amber Easthope 0-2 1-2 1, Brittani Blake 0-1 0-0 0, Taylor Zablocki 0-0 0-0 0, Alex Luber 0-0 0-0 0, Katie Burak 0-0 0-0 0, Geri Anstice 1-2 0-2 2, Kerrilynn MacLennan 0-1 0-0 0. Source: The Philadelphia InquirerOct.mini storage 13--The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost two consecutive games late last season to fall to 6-6. But they were optimistic about rebounding when the Eagles visited Dec. 9 because the Birds started a little-known rookie quarterback named Nick Foles."At least in my mind, he was the kind of guy you really wanted to see at that point, because we really needed a win," former Bucs Pro Bowl defensive back Ronde Barber said this past week.Barber quickly realized that Foles was better than Tampa Bay's defense anticipated."He got on the field," Barber said, "and I was shocked."In the finest day of Foles' short career, the third-round pick completed 32 of 51 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns. Foles rallied the Eagles to a 23-21 victory by throwing two touchdowns in the final four minutes, including a game-winning pass to Jeremy Maclin as time expired. It was the only happy postgame locker room in Foles' six starts last season, and the final victory of Andy Reid's 14 years in Philadelphia."For me, it was my first one," Foles said this past week. "My first and only one. It felt really good to win the game like that."Foles will have the chance to earn his second win as a starter in the same place as his first. He's expected to start for the Eagles on Sunday when they visit Tampa Bay because Michael Vick is unlikely to play with a pulled left hamstring.Foles has a new coach and is in a new system, and the offensive talent is significantly upgraded from the depleted roster he won with last season. Tampa Bay improved its defense, although Barber will now be in the broadcast booth analyzing Sunday's game for Fox instead of playing safety. The Bucs are aware of Foles can do -- "We know him all to well," Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano said -- and need to stop Foles to secure their first win of the season. If Tampa Bay's defense again tries to thwart the Eagles running game, it has vivid memories of Foles' ability."He had to be the guy who threw 381 yards," Barber said, "and he was the guy who threw for 381 yards."The winFoles started three games before the Eagles visited Tampa in 2012. He lost all three, and the Eagles were on an eight-game losing streak. Foles' performances were uneven -- he averaged 191 yards and had just one touchdown and two interceptions in the previous starts -- but he was playing without much of his offensive line, and LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson were playing with injuries. The best part of the Eagles offense was Bryce Brown, who averaged 173.5 rushing yards during the previous two games. Tampa Bay used a strong rush defense to limit Brown."The Bucs were a top five defense against the rush, and they obviously showed it and proved it that day," said Brown, who rushed for six yards on 12 carries. So the Eagles relied on the pass. Tampa Bay tried different types of blitzes, and Barber remembered "there was no panic" in Foles."We thought that since he was a rookie, we were going to fluster him and mess him up," said Eagles linebacker Najee Goode, who played for Tampa Bay that day. "It shocked the hell out of us."Foles' best work came in the fourth quarter. The Eagles trailed, 21-10, with 7 minutes 21 seconds remaining. Foles completed 6 of 7 passes for 76 yards on a scoring drive that finished with an 11-yard connection to Clay Harbor in the end zone. They missed the two-point conversion, and needed the defense to get the ball back while trailing by five points. In a rare occurrence last season, the defense did its job. It forced Tampa Bay to punt after just 71 seconds, and Foles reclaimed possession with 2 minutes, 44 seconds left.Foles completed just three of his first six passes on the drive and took a sack, but he was aided by a defensive holding that gave the Eagles a first down. On 4th and 1 at the Bucs 31-yard line with 54 seconds remaining, Foles dropped back in the shotgun, then tucked the ball and scrambled 3 yards for the first down. It was a decision Vick is more apt to make than Foles."He's definitely more athletic than you think," Barber said.Barber didn't know that until they played. He 儲存lso didn't realize how big Foles was until they played. On the next fourth down -- 4th and 5 -- Foles connected with Jason Avant for a 22-yard pass to the 1-yard line.Tampa Bay called a timeout after the Eagles spiked the ball, and Foles retreated to the sideline with time for just one snap. He met with Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg."I want that one," Foles said, picking a rollout that put Jeremy Maclin in single coverage along the sideline.Foles ran to his right and hit Maclin along the side of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Maclin sprinted in glee. The sideline erupted in celebration. Reid hugged offensive line coach Howard Mudd. Foles stood still, his expression unchanged."He called it, he wanted it, he executed it," Reid said after the game, also adding, "he showed great intestinal fortitude and desire and all the intangible things you look for."Maclin said after the game that he thought Foles "can be special" and that Foles' "intangibles are off the chart." Goode remembered the crowd failed to intimidate Foles, and the defense noticed the command Foles had in tense moments. Barber couldn't believe Foles' poise for a rookie."It wasn't too big for him," Barber said. "Having that kind of confidence and that sense about you, that's rare. You don't see that in very many players."There were few euphoric locker rooms before that game, and there were none after. But for that one day, pandemonium reigned in the bowels of Raymond James Stadium."We had lost like a 100 straight before that," Avant joked."It felt like we won the Super Bowl that day," Mychal Kendricks said."It was definitely a happy locker room, happy plane ride home," DeMeco Ryans said. But that excitement was limited to a few hours. King Dunlap reminded the players on the flight that they couldn't enjoy it long because they had a Thursday night game that week against the Bengals. The Eagles' only win in months could not even linger into Monday. The Eagles -- and Foles -- struggled against Cincinnati. They did not win again that year. Foles suffered an injury in Week 16. Reid was fired, there were major changes in the organization. Foles became a backup again. But he always had one afternoon in Tampa Bay."It was definitely special," Foles said. "Everything we had gone through that season -- it was a tough season for everyone."One year laterFoles watched the film of that Tampa Bay game this past week. So did the Eagles' coaches, most of whom are new. They wanted to see how the defense played against Foles."It's the same style of defense," offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said. "Even though our scheme is different, there are a lot of plays that are similar. I've said it all along, there's four verticals and a curl flat in every offense, you know, and so we were able to see Nick against the Tampa Bay Bucs and the way that they function defensively."Tampa Bay has since bolstered its defense, adding Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson in the secondary. Young players have also improved. But this is also a different Eagles offense. McCoy and Jackson are back. They have a healthy offensive line. And coach Chip Kelly's system is new.Plus, Foles believes he's a better quarterback than he was Tampa Bay last season. But he does not believe that experience in December will help him on Sunday."Not at all," Foles said. "It's a new season, new game."Schiano and the Bucs know what Foles can do. Barber does, too. Barber said Foles is "one of the top guys you want as a backup right now" and added Foles can be an NFL starter. When he watched Foles relieve Vick last week, Barber didn't expect Foles to play as well as he did. It reminded him of the experience last season."I'm still kind of taken aback by the way he is now, still, just how poised he is," Barber said. "He was supremely confident. You can just see it. That didn't show up to me on tape [last season], but it showed up to me in that game."zberman@phillynews.com@ZBermCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Philadelphia Inquirer Visit The Philadelphia Inquirer at .philly.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉
