Up, up, Huawei finds new friends in Europe nations
The Chinese telecommunications company’s fortunes continue to rise globallyBy Fu Jing in Amsterdamfujing@chinadaily.迷你倉最平com.cnAfter the Chinese telecommunications company Huawei opened an exhibition center near Amsterdam recently, Eberhard van der Laan, the city’s mayor, sang the company’s praises to business leaders in a speech.“I learnt the concept of clouding technology during my visit to Huawei headquarters in Shenzhen two years ago,” he says. The telling of that anecdote is typical of Van der Laan’s unstinting praise of Huawei’s contribution to his city and his country.Yet 10 years ago when Huawei, now a global leader in its field, sent Patrick Zhang to Europe to explore market opportunities, he says he was unsure about what kind of reception it would receive. The company ended up receiving such a good hearing and gaining such widespread recognition that recently local radio in the Netherlands broadcast live when Huawei hosted a half-day forum on trends in global information technology and big data.Reflecting the company’s growing presence in Europe, it has become the biggest Chinese investor in the Netherlands after 10 years of expansion.“When we first went to Europe, we virtually wandered the streets like tourists looking for customers,” says Zhang, now president of marketing and solutions at Huawei Enterprise Business Group, in an interview in Amsterdam.“It was very hard. The first steps were particularly difficult.”Huawei has been highly successful in Europe thanks to its strategy of localization and attaching great importance to research and development. It now has ties with 560 European channel partners in telecommunications operations, had a turnover in the continent of $4.17 billion last year, and has more than 7,500 staff, most of them Europeans. With that success, the company decided in 2011 to take a new tack, offering information and telecommunications services to businesses directly rather than through other telecommunications companies. That business is now growing rapidly, Zhang says, and the company expects it will have annual turnover of $1 billion in the coming three to five years.Compared with Huawei’s expansion in the US, which has run into roadblocks, Zhang says his company has been welcomed in most European countries and will diversify its service portfolio in the continent. In Europe, Huawei has been “treated fairly”, Zhang says, “unlike in the US, where we have encountered access difficulties for groundless reasons given by the US side”.Huawei has 13 R&D sites in eight European countries (Belgium, Britain, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Sweden) and operates dozens of innovation centers in partnership with local telecom and ICT operators. The company, paving the way for its expansion in Europe, says it plans to create 5,500 jobs on the continent over the next five years.“Apart from research and development, localization is our key to success,” Zhang says.儲存he exhibition center in Amstelveen, a suburb of Amsterdam, at the opening of which Van de Laan spoke recently, is aimed at global and innovative solutions specifically for the enterprise market. The 250 square meter center is also being used to illustrate and promote cloud computing, the real-world use of big data and the impact of social media on the success of enterprises.Huawei says the center is a milestone in its expansion in Europe, particularly in the Benelux countries.“By opening this new exhibition center I believe Huawei is demonstrating its commitment to long-term development in the Netherlands,” says Li Fei, economic counselor of the Chinese embassy in the Netherlands.“It also demonstrates the Netherlands’ favorable investment environment.”Simon Xin, CEO of Huawei Benelux, says the company has expanded rapidly since it was founded in 1987. “We have more than 150,000 employees in more than 140 countries … In Benelux we have more than 650 employees, of whom 73 percent are local staff, and we aim for more.”Europe is like a second home market for the company, Zhang says. Nevertheless, the enterprise business in Europe has not been all plain sailing, given the highly competitive market. But if Huawei can succeed in Europe, it can achieve more globally, Zhang says. The company has about 10,000 staff working in research and development on the business sector to meet mounting demand, he says. The company also sells communications and information technology for railways and says it has nearly 35 percent of the global market.“We expect to enter this field in Europe, too,” Zhang says.To give its businesses in new markets an extra push, Zhang says the company has changed its communications strategy in recent years.“We used to deal mainly with telecommunications operators and channel partners,” Zhang says. But offering technology solutions to enterprises has changed all that, he says.“We need to meet a huge number of customers and explain what we do and what we can offer — and we need to become more open-minded.”Nearly half of the company’s 150,000 staff work in research and development, and it will invest $5.5 billion in research and development this year, up from $4.85 billion last year, Zhang says.“Research and development is our growth engine.”However, in May the European Commission decided to use trade defense tools to set barriers against China’s mobile and telecommunications products, even though none of Huawei’s rivals has complained about the Chinese company’s activities. In the US, Huawei and another Chinese company, ZTE, have been accused of posing a security risk.“The reasons (offered by the US) are groundless,” Zhang says. “The fact is that since we started to go global, there has not been one security complaint against us. Our services and products cover about 2 billion people worldwide.“In fact, we are always doing our best to offer security and anti-virus solutions to our partners.”mini storage

Komen Tulsa Race for the Cure draws thousands
Source: Tulsa World, Okla. Sept. 29--Patricia Stevenson and Janice Wright have been friends for almost 30 years, but their bond goes far deeper than that.Stevenson and Wright were among hundreds of breast cancer survivors who gathered at ONEOK Field on Saturday morning for the 17th Komen Tulsa Race for the Cure."There are no strangers here," said Stevenson, who added there is a special sense of camaraderie among those who were wearing pink "survivor" T-shirts on Saturday."We get strength from each other," Wright said.Wright said she has especially drawn inspiration from her long-time co-worker Stevenson, whose battle with cancer had begun shortly before her own."If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't know what to do," said Wright, who said she has undergone four rounds of chemotherapy and 33 rounds of radiation.Stevenson had already undergone a double mastectomy and four months of chemotherapy in 2009 before Wright was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2009. Wright recalled on Saturday that she told Stevenson of her bad news at a Christmas party.Sandy Carter also remembers having an otherwise festive occasion spoiled in quite a similar way. She said she received her diagnosis on her 50th birthday.Carter is now in her seventh year as a breast cancer survivor. She said at one point she had to endure 11 different medical procedures over a 16-month time frame.Although she is cancer-free these days, Carter said of the disease, "I don't know if you ever really put it behind you."Carter said she stays in contact with several other survivors and is glad to see other familiar faces at the annual Race for the Cure.Christy Southard, executive director of the Tulsa affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, said about 9,000 people took part in Saturday's running and walking events, with about 700 to 800 being breast cancer survivors.Yolonda Beatty said Race for the Cure is a chance to gather with "people who understand what you've been through."Some of those who were on hand on Saturday are regulars at the Race.Connie and Paul Brown have been married for 52 years. It was on the Tulsa couple's anniversary date in 2010 that Connie was diagnosed with cancer, the same disease that Paul has been battling since 2001.Other participants were new to the spectacle and emotion of the event."This is overwhelming," said Kim Thornberry, who said she was diagnosed in January. "The support is just phenomenal."Thornberry, a Jenks High School teacher, was also drawing support from a team of 28 peopl文件倉 that turned out to cheer her on."I'm very blessed to be here," said Jennifer Thurman, who said she received her diagnosis on New Year's Eve 2002 and soon after endured five surgeries over a nine-month span.Thurman said that breast cancer survivors become a sort of network, encouraging each other to keep fighting. She said she is also heartened by the consistent support that Tulsa provides to the Race for the Cure, which raises funds for breast cancer research and education.Southard said last year's event raised close to $800,000 with a similar total expected this year once everything is tallied up later in the year. The hope is that someday a cure will be found and events such as this won't be necessary, Until then, the spirit on display in a baseball park on Saturday stood as evidence that this is a contest that can be won.Stevenson said, "when you first hear the term, 'breast cancer' you think you are going to die."However, both Stevenson and Wright were very much alive on Saturday. As music filled ONEOK Field, they sobbed and embraced in a display that seemed to include joy, relief, sadness and about a thousand other emotions to which words cannot do justice.CureSearch for Children's Cancer raises about $76,000The battle against cancer was being fought on two fronts in Tulsa on Saturday morning.About 1,000 people participated in a walk in south Tulsa that benefitted CureSearch for Children's Cancer, according to that event's chairwoman Candin Hobbs.Hobbs said dozens of teams took part in the walk, which was held at Oral Roberts University. Besides the walk, Hobbs said there were various other festivities, including medals being distributed to about 65 children who are fighting cancer.According to its website, CureSearch for Children's Cancer "funds and supports targeted and innovative children's cancer research with measurable results,"CureSearch raises funds through methods that include philanthropic donations from individuals, corporations and private foundations as well as sponsorships and special events, according to its website. The website says that in 2013, 60 CureSearch walks, such as the one held in Tulsa on Saturday, are scheduled to take place in various cities as well as 11 "ultimate hike" events.Hobbs said the third annual Tulsa event raised about $76,000.David Harper 918-581-8359david.harper@tulsaworld.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.)

Aggies' defense handle Razorbacks' 'kitchen-sink' offense, running backs take care of rest in 45-33 win
Source: The Eagle, Bryan, TexasSept. 29--FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Neither rain nor an inspired effort by the Arkansas Razorbacks could keep 10th-ranked Texas A&M from finding a way to continue winning on the road.A powerful running game and a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior free safety Deshazor Everett powered the Aggies to a 45-33 Southeastern Conference victory on Saturday night at Razorback Stadium.A&M (4-1, 1-1) won its ninth straight away from Kyle Field, including all five of its SEC road games since joining the league. Arkansas (3-2, 0-1), a two-touchdown underdog, gave a sellout crowd of 72,613 plenty to cheer about until A&M senior cornerback Tramain Jacobs knocked away a fourth-down pass by Arkansas' Brandon Allen with 6 minutes, 46 seconds left."Anytime you go on the road and win in this league, it's a good win," A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin said. "I thought our defense did enough to win the game."A&M's defense gave up 201 yards rushing, the fourth time this season the Aggies have allowed an opponent to top 200. A&M also allowed 282 yards passing and three touchdowns, but the Aggies never allowed Arkansas to take the lead.Arkansas scored the last 10 points of the first half to pull within 24-20, but A&M's defense came up with the game's first turnover on the third play of the third quarter.Everett, who moved to safety last week, stepped in front of intended receiver Keon Hatcher and returned the interception for his second defensive touchdown of the year. Everett had a 12-yard fumble recovery return for a score in last week's 42-13 victory over SMU."They threw the ball a lot more than you'd think they would," Everett said. "That really slowed us down, but we had to keep playing ball, and we just trusted the front and linebackers and did our job in the first half."Allen, who returned after missing the last seven quarters with a shoulder injury, was only 7-of-18 passing for 114 yards with two interceptions in the second half, including 2 of 10 in the fourth quarter, after opening 10 of 18 for 168 yards and two scores."A critical point for us was we knew we needed to score every time we had it and had to monopolize the ball," Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said. "I thought Brandon Allen was outstanding, to come in the way he did with a limited amount of practice was impressive."Allen's hiccup was just enough for the balanced Aggies, who didn't have a turnover, as quarterback Johnny Manziel had 320 total yards, but the Heisman winner had plenty of help as A&M rushed for 262 yards led by sophomore running back Trey Williams, who had 83 yards on nine second-half carries. Sophomore transfer running back Tra Carson added 64 yards on nine carries.Sophomore wide receiver Mike Evans had 116 yards on six receptions with two scores and senior wide receiver Derel Walker added seven catches for 81 yards.Manziel had 59 yards on nine carries to go along with 20-of-30 passing for 261 yards and two scores. He was only sacked once against Arkansas, which led the country文件倉with 14 entering the game."Their offense is very good and Johnny Manziel, no matter what anybody says about him, he is a great player," said Arkansas defensive end Chris Smith, who had half a sack in the game. "He made plays and created some plays at times."Manziel was able to lean on his running backs after Everett's interception.Trey Williams and Carson combined for all the carries on a nine-play, 68-yard drive that gave A&M a 38-27 lead after the Aggie defense had held Arkansas without a first down.Allen bounced back from his interception to complete back-to-back passes to tight end Hunter Henry for 21 and 26 yards before freshman running back Alex Collins dashed 9 yards to make it 31-27. Collins ended with 116 yards on 14 carries for his fourth 100-yard game of the season.Arkansas pulled within 38-33 near the end of third quarter on a 19-yard pass to running back Jonathan Williams, but Allen misfired on the two-point conversion. The defenses traded stops to start the fourth quarter before A&M grinded out another seven-play, 57-yard drive capped by Ben Malena's 1-yard run to make it 45-33.Arkansas reached the A&M 16 with a first down, but Allen threw four straight incompletions."I thought they had an excellent plan," Sumlin said. "They kept us off-balance, wheel routes, reverses. You name it. We got the kitchen sink tonight."Each team punted only once in the first half as the former Southwest Conference rivals played in the Hills for the first time since 1990.A&M's offense had an explosive start with Manziel and Evans hooking up to start and end a six-play, 75-yard drive. The first pass down the middle went for 49 yards, then Arkansas paid for giving Manziel too much time to find Evans for a 9-yard score on third-and-4.Arkansas answered in nine plays, covering a fourth down and a pair of third downs, including a 12-yard pass to Hatcher for a score.Malena gave A&M a 14-7 lead with a 2-yard run to cap a nine-play, 75-yard drive highlighted by Manziel's 20-yard run on third-and-10, followed by Carson's 19-yard rumble to the 2.A&M had to settle for a 39-yard field goal by Josh Lambo to make it 17-7, though the defense got the ball back at the Aggie 46 after the lone three-and-out of the half.Arkansas scored on its last three possessions of the first half.A&M's defense held for a 28-yard field goal by Arkansas' Zach Hocker after Henry had a 52-yard reception to the A&M 17.Arkansas had a 17-play, 82-yard drive on its next possession, scoring on a 19-yard catch by Williams with 6:02 left. That pulled the Razorbacks within 24-17, answering the nine-play, 75-yard drive that A&M had capped with Evans' 7-yard reception.Arkansas scored the last points of the half, crawling out of a hole following A&M's Drew Kaser's punt to the Razorbacks' 6 with 1:59 left. A 38-yard run by Collins and a 12-yard pass to Eric Hawkins led to Hocker's field goal.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Eagle (Bryan, Texas) Visit The Eagle (Bryan, Texas) at .theeagle.com Distributed by MCT Information Services存倉

Bridgeport tries to sink community boating program
Source: New Haven Register, Conn.mini storageSept. 29--BRIDGEPORT -- It's an idea that's tough to argue with. For seven years now, Connecticut Community Boating has worked as a nonprofit charity to extend boating access to Long Island Sound to low-income inner-city kids and others who don't have boats and have traditionally been cut off from the water. For $300 a year, anyone could learn to sail and come in and use one of what is a dwindling fleet of sailboats -- now down to about six after a number of others were stolen, vandalized, repossessed and sold off to pay expenses -- as if it were their own.For the past two years, the organization has operated from docks it built at its own expense beneath the Bridgeport railroad station in what it calls the Bridgeport Boat Basin on the Pequonnock River. It uses the area via an access agreement with the city of Bridgeport. But in recent years, through a combination of a bad economy, a tough environment for nonprofits, bad luck, damage from Superstorm Sandy -- and, CCB leaders say, interference from Bridgeport -- the organization's funds have dwindled. Its programs have dissipated.See video. It has lost most of its board members, and apparently the confidence of Mayor Bill Finch's administration. Now Bridgeport -- at the same time it's tossing around buzzwords like "riverfront recapture" and saying it wants to restore water access to the masses -- wants Connecticut Community Boating and its docks and moorings out.It informed CCB a few months back that it will not renew the access agreement, which applies to a walkway beneath the railroad tracks that lead from Water Street downtown to the docks, for a third year. The nonprofit and its tenacious, sometimes abrasive founder and executive director, Chris German, are fighting to keep the organization and its mission alive -- and accuse the Finch administration of making it a personal thing.Meanwhile, CCB has gone into what German calls "guerrilla mode," moving some vessels to other parts of the state to protect them and keep them from being seized."We've been asked in no uncertain terms to absolutely remove that thing," German said, referring to docks CCB paid about $40,000 to build. He admitted that CCB is essentially "bankrupt" -- and accused Bridgeport of "piracy" in blog and Facebook posts."Our facility in Bridgeport pretty much got shanghaied by the state of Connecticut and the city of Bridgeport and they pretty much shut us down," he said.CCB recently went to court to try to prevent what is essentially an eviction, but the judge would not let CCB, as a nonprofit, represent itself as a money-saving measure. German, a Stratford native who now lives upstate in Ashford, says CCB now has a lawyer willing to represent it, and vowed to appeal any order that may come down to quit the site."All those boats are registered" and "all those docks are permitted," German said in a recent interview joined by board President John Madden on a donated 1972 Grampion sailboat, tied to CCB's docks. "If they take them out, they're going to take them out over my dead body."Later, he said that while he's not willing to die over the issue, "I'm willing to go to jail for this ... They will need a court order" and "we'll fight and will appeal it," to the U.S. Supreme Court, if need be."I've spent the last seven years of my personal and professional life trying to build this organization so the public and the people of Bridgeport will have access to the Pequonnock River."German charged that Bridgeport now wants CCB's operating area to operate a water taxi service to the city's long-cut-off Pleasure Beach area, site of the former amusement park by the same name. Two water taxis are being built in Washington state."According to them, they are totally in favor of the mission of CCB," German said. "But me and, apparently, Bill Finch, don't get along" and "they feel I bad-mouthed the city of Bridgeport"But to me, I've always tried to work with the elected officials of the city of Bridgeport," German said.Asked about CCB's recent lack of boating programs, German said, "It's tough to operate programs when you've got the city and state bearing down on you."Madden, a Bridgeport native who lives in Ansonia, said there have been some programs. He said he has taken his son and a number of his classmates from a regional special-needs school in Trumbull out sailing."You see all this stuff -- this is all donated by private money given into our trust," Madden said. German "has always been open and honest" about the organization's dealings, he said.He faulted the city for failing to maintain the accessway to the dock area, which he said has been misused for drinking, urination and worse by vagrants in the area. As he spoke, the odor of two men smoking marijuana next to the CCB docks wafted over.Bill Coleman, director of neighborhood development for Bridgeport's Office of Planning and Economic Development, said the city is not out to get CCB and has no "grand conspiracy," but does want it to remove its docks and its boats. He has threatened to remove them for the nonprofit and store them at Captain's Cove in the Black Rock area if CCB does not do so itself."We're just trying very much to enact the mayor's initiative: riverfront recaptuself storagee," Coleman said. "We're trying to do all we can" to restore Bridgeport's waterfront "and reconnect people to the waterfront ..."We're not interested in being punitive to CCB in any way. We're not looking to seize their assets," he said. "I just want them stored in a safe place."Asked why the city can't work with CCB to help get it back on firm footing, given that its mission would seem to match the city's goal to reconnect people to the waterfront, Coleman said, "I have concluded that they are not able to do this. ... You have to recognize, we've worked with them for many years."In CCB's previous location upstream of Seaside Park, between the park and a former landfill, Bridgeport's Park Department "did not have a positive impression of how they conducted themselves on that site," Coleman said.In recent years, "I've worked very hard to connect Mr. German to people who should be natural allies," but none of that has worked, he said. "I've concluded that they just don't have the capacity or the credibility to do it. ... After a while you just realize that this is just not a credible group ... It's just not responsible to continue to work with them."With regard to German's contention that Bridgeport wants the CCB site as a landing for its water taxies, Coleman said, "No, there's no grander conspiracy."He pointed out that "I advocated to bring them" to the current location, but now he feels otherwise. One of the board members who left a little more than a year ago, Joe Ryan of Ryan's Marine Services, said that at the time, "I think almost the whole board resigned ..."We were thinking of removing the director because he was not doing what he was supposed to," he said. "He's had some troubles, but he causes a lot of them because he's always looking for some crusade every time someone says no to him."He's a good guy, he's got a good plan, but it's not working for him," Ryan said. "I think Bridgeport was more than fair to him. They gave him Seaside Park ... and then they gave him the spot at the train station."The current issues began at the end of 2012 when CCB, which had obtained state permits to install floating docks in the area, "began construction on a clubhouse of sorts" and "put it on a platform dock that was wider than what was permitted," Coleman said.About the time the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection notified CCB of that, CCB was notified by Bridgeport's Harbor Commission that it had to remove moorings it had received permission to place in the boat basin for the winter, he said.German later claimed -- and still does -- that the dock the boathouse was being built on was actually a boat, licensed by the state Department of Transportation and the U.S. Coast Guard."I think it's something that could have been addressed if he had chose to address it," Coleman said.Meanwhile "the site ... was not being used ... I saw no programs going on ... Chris was not communicative" and "the programming simply wasn't there," he said. CCB also let its insurance lapse, he said.So "since he wouldn't address those concerns and in fact chose to dispute it with them, I couldn't renew" the access agreement, Coleman said.Asked if he thought the issues were repairable, Coleman said, "No, Chris has had a lot of time to work cooperatively and that's just not his style."He said that as a nonprofit in partnership with the city, "you can't not run programs ... You can't be out of compliance ...You can't not have insurance" and "you can't not respond to the Harbor Commission."German admitted that "I've stopped being responsive to them because it was clear that they were not going to let us operate." That, along with a shortage of cash, also is why CCB didn't maintain its insurance, he said.So if things are so tough with Bridgeport, why not just move CCB somewhere else?German said he's looked into it, and in fact, has kept some boats in Groton and Guilford at times.Current CCB board member Chris Walker of Guilford -- one of just four remaining on the board, including German -- said he has pushed for that. He thinks CCB "should just start fresh in a city that embraces" what it wants to do.Like perhaps New Haven, he said.New Haven City Plan Director Karyn Gilvarg said the city "might be interested if there were programs."But while German and Madden said they have made initial inquiries about possibly operating out of the replica of the former Yale Boathouse being constructed at the end of Canal Dock Road in the Long Wharf area, Gilvarg said all they did was show up at one meeting at which the boathouse was being discussed."But I don't think there's been any follow-up from them for over a year," she said.Meanwhile, German has investigated other possibilities, including buying a larger vessel to operate as a sailing-school ship -- and even buying one of the lighthouses off the state's coast to use as a base of operations, but fund-raising difficulties and other issues have kept any of that from going forward."It's not been as active as we had hoped," German said.Call Mark Zaretsky at 203-789-5722.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the New Haven Register (New Haven, Conn.)
