"I wish I could do a whole lot more."Shaylor, the ninth daughter in a family of 13 children, grew up with a strong understanding of the importance of caring for and giving to others.Besides handing out bread, she's given haircuts to underprivileged kids and shut-ins, taken care of Alzheimer's patients and helped countless people with small chores, such as driving them back and forth to the store or doctor. She also can often be found giving hugs and sharing prayers with residents at The Ray Hickey Hospice House."Some of the people there, they don't speak English, but they all understand a prayer and a hug," Shaylor said. "I think it's just important to be wherever you're needed. So that's what I try to do."Lucille Harwood,迷你倉88, a member of Salmon Creek Grange 849, said she's constantly amazed by Shaylor's generosity, kindness and upbeat nature. The Grange gave Shaylor its annual Honored Community Citizen award in November."She's a lady that does so much benevolent work," Harwood said. "She just does all sorts of things. She's a very wonderful woman."Shaylor, a devout Christian, said it's really her pleasure to help others."I just like to feel that I did the best I could with this day I was blessed with," Shaylor said. "There's always something you can do."The spirit of generosity is something she said she learned from her parents and she hopes she instilled in her family. Shaylor has two daughters, six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, all in or near Clark County."I wouldn't be doing any of this if it wasn't for the love of the Lord," Shaylor said. Hall of Famer opens the door to managing — sort of, Reuters reports in Baltimore. Despite gaining a little weight and losing the rest of his hair since walking away from baseball a dozen years ago, Cal Ripken Jr. remains instantly recognizable. It doesn’t matter if it is downtown Baltimore or some tiny hamlet in Puget Sound, jaws drop and eyes open wide when he enters a room.“I still get recognized in places I would have never dreamed,” said Ripken. “In an antique shop in a small town. You go in and there are some older women in there and you’d think there’s no connection to baseball whatsoever.“I’d come in and immediately get ID’d.”He’s a 19-time All-Star for the Baltimore Orioles and a Hall of Famer but it was Ripken’s record for consecutive games played, known simply in Baltimore as The Streak, that forever tossed him into the spotlight. The record, set in 1995, snapped Lou Gehrig’s seemingly unbreakable mark of 2,130 consecutive games played. More people remember the night Ripken set the record than recall he finally took a seat after playing in 2,632 straight games.“There was something about 2,131 — the relation to a work ethic — something that caught the country’s attention in that particular year,” the soft-spoken Ripken said in a wide-ranging interview at his foundation’s headquarters.Ripken, 53, discussed his desire to return to baseball, his foundation’s work building ballparks for children around the United States, and his sadness over Alex Rodriguez’s continuing saga over performance-enhancing drugs. The year Ripken eclipsed Gehrig’s record followed the 1994 work stoppage that scrapped the entire postseason. Ripken said the record came at a time when the sport needed a lift.“It gave you a glossy feeling, that you were comparing baseball in your mind to the history of the game,” he said. “Lou Gehrig was one of the game’s best players. And so now the streak was front and center, and connected me to Gehrig’s era of baseball and people were looking for something good.”After Ripken retired in 2001, he spent time with his family and his foundation, but now his two children are grown, he is ready to listen to offers about getting back in the game.Ripken said he has been asked several times since retiring to interview for a managerial post but always declined. While he is not sitting by the phone, he would now pick it up if it rings.“I’m not lobbying for it because if I was really interested in doing it, I would pick up the phone and call a team directly,” he said. “But if somebody thought of me in that way — and some people have — I would listen to it.”Great stridesRipken admitted if he would become a big league manager, he would like it to be with Baltimore, where he spent his entire 21-year playing career. But the life-long Marylander conceded with Buck Showalter’s success managing the Orioles, that will not happen any time soon.“Ideally, you would want to put the same uniform back on but the reality states that Buck is there and there is not an opportunity,” he said. “I don’t know the landscape of how that works. And it feels weird to think about other places.“I have to sit down and think, ‘What do I really want to do?’ I haven’t figured it out yet. There’s nothing wrong w迷你倉將軍澳th exploring it if somebody else wants to explore it.”Ripken believes baseball has made great strides toward eliminating the use of performance-enhancing drugs though he admits, “I’m not an expert, period, about steroids”.“From a fan’s standpoint, someone who loves the game, it’s been damaging — how they throw around the steroid era as if other people didn’t do it the right way,” he said.“That kind of tarnishes everyone’s accomplishments, just by a general mindset and that’s always bothered me a little bit. From 10,000 feet, it seems like they are very serious about getting rid of steroids. But it’s very much a work in progress.”Ripken expressed heartache for Rodriguez, the New York Yankees third baseman who is appealing his 211-game, PED-related suspension from Major League Baseball.“I met him when he was 16 years old,” Ripken said. “He was a good kid. He’s a student of the game, he loved the game. He was passionate. He ate up all the information I ever gave him.“That’s why I see it as more sad than anything else because I see the good side in him.”Youth ballparksWhether or not Ripken returns to baseball, he will remain active in his foundation, named after his father, Cal Ripken Sr., a former manager of the Orioles who died in 1999.The foundation has been busy building multi-purpose “Youth Development Parks” in decaying areas across the country, facilities that cost more than $1 million each. By the end of 2013, 26 parks will have been completed and Ripken hopes to have 50 in operation within five years. This week, the foundation will announce an effort to raise $30 million in 2014 to build more parks.“In many areas, the kids we target are forgotten because people feel like they can’t fix them, they can’t reach them anymore,” said Ripken, who becomes animated when discussing the foundation, his sparkling blue eyes widening. He said the parks, built in “tough” places, trigger clean-ups of the areas.“Because it looks so nice, other people in the area get motivated to do nice things,” said Ripken. “Once the community sees what you are putting in there, they embrace it and some magic starts to happen. It truly is transformational.“We are not looking for big league players, although we might find one or two. We are looking to give the kids an opportunity, a chance. And sport is magical that way.”Ripken, inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007, will never stray too far from the foundation whether or not he re-enters Major League Baseball. There are a lot of people who feel it’s just a matter of time that Ripken will don his No 8 uniform once again. It would be tough for the folks in Baltimore to see him wear another team’s uniform but many feel it might be worth it just to see him back in the game.Ripken, leaning back in his chair and clasping his hands behind his head, says he is not sure if getting dressed in something other than black and orange would be emotional.“How would it feel to wear a uniform from a team other than the Orioles?” he asked. “That’s a question I can’t answer. I just don’t know.”There was something about 2,131 — the relation to a work ethic — something that caught the country’s attention in that particular year.”cal ripken JR., 19-time All-Star and Hall of Famer迷你倉尖沙咀

Source: Dayton Daily News, OhioDec. 14--TROTWOOD -- As soon as his game ends in Danville, Ill., next Sunday night, Jesse Felten -- the veteran Dayton Demonz forward, team captain and goal scorer of note -- will get into his car and drive some 400 miles through the night to his family's picturesque 240-acre farm in the hills outside Cashton, Wis.On this quick trip home for the holidays, he'll take part in the family gift exchange, sit around the big Amish table -- special emphasis on big -- for Christmas dinner and certainly take part in a traditional family hockey game on a basketball/tennis court specially flooded and frozen into a sheet of ice behind the house."I'm taking my skates back so they better have that rink going," Jesse said as he sat just off the ice at Hara Arena after practice the other day.Out in Cashton, Ron Felten, Jesse's 77-year-old father, said his son had nothing to worry about:"We've had some beautiful cold weather and another of our sons, Devin -- he had the day off from the Amish Cheese factory where he works -- got up last night about midnight and was out there until 3 a.m. watering the court," Ron said. "He did it a few times the day before, too, so we've got a pretty good base. The kids will be able to skate."While Jesse said he has some nephews who are skating now, the bulk of the players -- enough for two full teams in what will be a spirited game -- are his own brothers and sisters.Jesse is from a family of 23 children.Five are the biological daughters of Ron and Carol Felten. There's also a foster child and 17 of the kids -- including Jesse -- have been adopted from around the world. As holiday stories go, few eclipse Jesse's when it comes to the yuletide themes of giving, love and family. The adopted children, all raised by Ron and Carol without financial or medical assistance from the government, came from Korea, Brazil, Taiwan and around the U.S., including Wisconsin, Chicago, Georgia and Dallas, where Jesse and his younger brother, Joey, were born. A few of the children had physical handicaps, others did not and several were just about the same age."Eight of them were in diapers at the same time, so that means eight were teenagers together and eight played hockey at the same time," Ron said.Over the years, all of them -- be they spectators or quite willing participants -- have been drawn to that behind-the-house court for the sporting confrontations. In summer it was rollerblade hockey and in winter the nets were separated by that sheet of ice."We had every position covered -- goalies, good centers, forwards and defensive players," Ron said. "Some other teams wanted to play us -- in fact, we had a game lined up once against another town but bad weather canceled it -- and that's too bad. I would have liked to have seen it even though I know we'd have been at a disadvantage because we didn't have enough substitutes."As front-line players go, though, the Feltens had some talent. Besides Jesse, who became a pro after junior hockey and a year at Briercrest College in Saskatchewan, Sandra played four years of hockey at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn."Oh yeah, when we were growing up the girls were almost more vicious out there than we were," Jesse said with a laugh. "My sisters could hold their own on the ice. They weren't afraid to play rough."'Thank you to God'Ron and Carol began adopting kids into their family after they nearly lost one of their own children.A certified public accountant for a firm from Wausau, Wis., in the early 1980s, Ron would be away from the farm for two and three days each week. It was during one of those business trips that Carol was doing laundry at home late one night.Kris, their fourth daughter who was just a few weeks old, was upstairs sleeping."My wife happened to come up there and she found the baby had stopped breathing and was turning blue. It was one of those crib-death type situations," Ron said."We had a 13-year-old, half-Japanese daughter -- whose own mom had died -- who was living with us at the time. My wife -- she's a trained nurse -- woke her and had her wrap her arms around the baby as they rushed to the hospital in Viroqua."The baby started breathing on the way, but when they got there, her fingers were still quite dark and it was evident some extremities had been without oxygen. After a night in the hospital, though, the baby was released and was fine. Today Kris runs my office. She's married and has five children of her own."But back then my wife knew if she had not come upstairs when she did, our baby probably would have died. As a thank you to God, we thought we'd adopt a child."They adopted a boy from Korea, then brought four more children from there back to the farm, where they raised horses, had a collection of other animals and Carol bred Saint Bernards. After the Korean quintet, they adopted four black children, including Jesse."We did that purposely," Ron said. "My wife was looking through an adoption magazine and read about a real need for adoptive parents for black children who often don't get adopted. We got Jesse when he was two months old and not long after that we got his biological brother who had been born 11 months later."The family then went to Sao Paolo, Brazil to adopt five more children, including 12-year-old Paulo,儲存who was a quadriplegic suffering from a degenerative arthritic disorder and had been in an orphanage since he was 2.Once back in Wisconsin, by the way, Paulo soon was sledding, going to horse shows in his wheelchair and becoming one of the family's most outgoing ambassadors. The last child they adopted was Mei-ling, a 2-year-old from Taiwan who was blind and had been living in an orphanage since her birth.Today, she is a celebrated fiddler -- she also plays the piano and is trained in classical violin -- touring with cowboy singer Michael Martin Murphey. That there are so many success stories in the Felten family is a credit to Ron and Carol and the way the kids were raised. Many were home-schooled, all had chores (Jesse took care of the horses and did farm work), some helped with the nearby Living Waters Bible Camp of which Ron was a founder and the original director, and along the way all the kids learned how to share and get along."With all those kids, we never once had a broken bone," Ron said proudly. "To be truthful, I saw more conflict in families that had just two kids than I ever saw in our home. There was always something to do for the children and if they didn't want to be with one person, there were plenty others to play with."Special trip homeJesse said he was about 6 the first time he saw hockey on TV:"I had always wanted to be just like Michael Jordan and then I saw my first hockey game and asked my mom if I could play," he said. "The next year she signed me up for a team and I fell in love with it."Although few black kids played the sport, especially in rural Wisconsin, Jesse said he was not dissuaded or overtly discriminated against:"My parents had warned me growing up, even before I went off to play hockey, that occasionally I'd hear stuff because that's just the world we live in. They told me, 'You can choose to listen to it or you can turn around and keep smiling and try to make somebody else happy.'"I follow that advice even now. Sometimes I'll hear something and it will make me a little angry, but other times if a guy is throwing racist slurs, I just try to embarrass him on the ice."And he certainly can do that. From the time he was small -- and he's still just 5-foot 8, although, as Demonz coach Trevor Karasiewicz said, "He's a pretty strong, tough kid who's got some real muscle to him" -- he has shown speed and skill on skates.Following three years of prep hockey at Viroqua High School, he played his senior season with the Madison Capitols youth team, played two more years of junior hockey in North Dakota, Minnesota and New York and then spent a year in college. He turned pro in 2008, played with the Brooklyn (N.Y.) Aces of the Eastern Professional Hockey League, then joined the New York Aviators of the Federal Hockey League for a season and the following year was part of the renamed Brooklyn AviatorsHe came to the Demonz last season and had a stellar campaign, scoring 35 goals and adding 31 assists in 49 games.Karasiewicz, in his first year as coach after playing for the Demonz last season, said he made sure Jesse was a part of his roster this year:"He was a huge part of our team last year, a real goal scorer, and I knew he'd be a great leader for our young guys. I've played with him on the line, played against him, too, and I know he brings a lot of grit and heart to the ice."Now 27, Jesse said he wants to keep playing as long as he can and then, one day, become a coach:"I know I don't have too many years left, but I also don't think when anybody's on their death bed they look back and say, 'I played too long.' "Of course, the grind of minor league hockey has kept him from making it back home some recent Christmas seasons. That's why this return trip will be special."My parents are just great people," he said. "They wanted to give a bunch of kids a chance at a better life and they did that. My brothers and sisters and I, we all really got lucky. We became part of a family that supported us and loved us and taught us some great lessons along the way."And he puts those lessons into practice when he can. When he was in New York, he helped instruct youth league teams and took a young black player -- who is now playing in high school and wants to follow Jesse's footsteps to the pros -- under his wing.Back home a few years ago he worked as a counselor at a group home for adolescent boys with emotional and behavioral problems. Here in Dayton he's always signing autographs for kids after games and is involved in the team's various community projects.Last week the players worked on a Trotwood home as part of a Habitat for Humanity project. This week the Demonz will be volunteering as Salvation Army bell ringers outside various stores in the Dayton area.Jesse said "doing for others" is something his parents instilled in all their kids:"If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here. I think of that every day.

Fighting soccer fans, fashion models screaming obscenities and a French film star relieving himself in the gangway are just a few well publicized examples of what airlines say is a growing trend of abusive behavior on planes.儲存The International Air Transport Association says it aims to use a conference in Montreal next March to seek agreement on the rights of crews and captains to do whatever is necessary to subdue offenders."Unruly passenger behavior ... is on the increase," Tim Colehan of the Geneva-based group told reporters. "It is a problem which our crews and other travelers face every day."He cited as typical a woman passenger who fought cabin crew after throwing liquor at them, and then shouted abuse at stewards and fellow passengers throughout an overnight flight from Europe to Thailand.Since 2007, when it began recording data, well over 15,000 incidents have been reported to IATA, Colehan said. "But there are almost certainly many more which we never hear about."The problem for the airlines and the crews, said Colehan, is that international law has not caught up with global air travel迷你倉Often offenders, like the violent woman passenger on the Bangkok flight, go scot-free because police in countries where planes land say they have no jurisdiction.Worse, IATA says, the lack of clarity in the current 1963 Tokyo Convention that governs such cases leaves cabin crew and pilots uncertain on how to respond."There is always the fear that they could be sued for assault if they restrain a violent passenger," Colehan said.Other incidents in the skies this year include a violent attack on a stewardess in China, an American viewing pornography on his computer, and a South African couple having First Class sex, according to media reports.A Russian woman on a flight from Los Angeles to London drank liquid soap when refused alcohol, and tried to bite a steward. On another plane a man seized wine from a trolley and locked himself in the toilet to drink it.IATA wants governments to agree on a new convention that will spell out the right of an airliner's captain to do what he feels necessary to control misbehaving passengers. Its 240-odd members include almost all the world's scheduled carriers.self storage
