Area now part of armadillos northward march
Source: Star-News, Wilmington, N.存倉C.July 24--At first glance, Ellen Jo Kraemer thought it was a giant turtle. She grabbed her binoculars -- which she routinely uses to spot alligators from her southern New Hanover County home in The Cape neighborhood -- and peered across the backyard."I thought, 'Whoa, that is no turtle,'" Kraemer said.Across a pond at the Masonboro Country Club, standing on the golf course's seventh fairway, the creature crouched low to the ground."All of a sudden, I'm seeing these legs and the way it's moving forward," she said, recalling the April sighting. "I could see the tail and the shape."It was then she realized what she was looking at: an armadillo. By the time she returned, clutching her camera, the animal was gone."I was just thinking, 'Nobody is going to believe this story,'" she said. She was wrong. After hearing Kraemer's report, wildlife officials updated the statewide map of armadillo sightings. They shaded New Hanover County blue, denoting a credible observation. The sighting came as no surprise to wildlife biologist Colleen Olfenbuttel, who works for the state's Wildlife Resources Commission. She considers Southeastern North Carolina one of two hotspots for armadillos, which are also emerging in the mountains in the western part of the state.By all accounts, we should expect to see more of them.Northward marchArmadillos, long associated with states in the Deep South, have been slowly moving north.Around 1850, armadillos, native to South and Central America, were recorded in Texas. By the start of the Cold War, they had traversed the Mississippi River and moved into Florida. Eventually, they moved as far as Tennessee and South Carolina. As their populations have increased, their range has broadened. Their potential range is as far north as the southern portion of New York State.Human development fosters their mobility. Armadillos can use roads and highways as travel corridors, Olfenbuttel said.In 2009, the Wildlife Commission took a report from a driver in Bladen County who reported seeing an armadillo jumping off a Florida truck full of palm trees. Armadillos could come here on trucks or with people, but Olfenbuttel said they can also wander in on their own.Armadillos are also swimmers, which made sense to Kraemer, whose home in The Cape is just across River Road. She wonders if the armadillo swam across the Cape Fear River and splashed through marshy areas before taking a walk on the golf course.Across the border in South Carolina, biologists have confirmed that armadillos live in the southern part of the Palmetto State. Although biologists haven't confirmed as many armadillos in the northern part of the state, they accept they are there, Olfenbuttel said.Kevin Murphy, who operates Critter Control of Charleston (S.C.), said he has dealt with some in his territory. He has seen them dead on the roads, and has gotten some recent calls from Lowcountry residents wanting him to catch one digging in their yards. He expects to get more calls, too."I know they're coming," Murphy said. Here to staySo far, armadillos have been sighted in 12 North Carolina counties, including New Hanover and Brunswick County. While armadillos自存倉are at a "very, very low density" in the state, Olfenbuttel believes that will change.Within the next decade or two, it would not surprise her if armadillos are documented in nearly every county in the state.Since armadillos are expanding populations in surrounding states, it makes sense they will come to North Carolina. Mountain populations could be fed by several states, but South Carolina is the main pipeline for this area.So are armadillos here to stay?It appears so. North Carolina's winters seem to be milder than they have in the past. Armadillos are limited by cold weather. For one, they can freeze to death, but frozen ground also makes it difficult for them to reach food. While cold weather could be more of a concern for mountain armadillos, it is less of a concern in Southeastern North Carolina."Your winters are very mild, so winter won't have much of a depression on their population," Olfenbuttel said.State officials want to hear from people who see -- or even think they see -- an armadillo."That's the only way we'll be able to track, as armadillos disperse and expand their range in the state," she said.New neighborsIn the years ahead, it is possible armadillo sightings could become fairly common in certain areas. What will our new neighbors be like?"They pretty much stay to themselves," said Jennifer Leonard, who operates Coastal Carolina Wildlife Rehab. She has not seen any armadillos here, but she saw plenty in Florida, where she used to live. "I would love to see them around here, they're neat," Leonard said. The slow-moving creatures, which can grunt similarly to pigs, roam anywhere from pine forests to coastal dunes. They also frequent man-made areas such as cemeteries, parks or roadsides. But with poor vision, they are known to wind up as roadkill. Most of the sightings in Brunswick and Robeson counties, for example, were from dead armadillos on the road.Andy Wood, an area naturalist who lived in Texas for a number of years, once assisted with an armadillo research project. When around people, the armadillos can get spooked."They'll jump when you're standing over them," Wood said. If they are on the road, they may jump straight up into a vehicle. "You'll hear a loud thud under your car."Earlier this week in Pender County, a driver told state troopers he swerved off the road to avoid hitting an armadillo on N.C. 53. The driver totalled a Mazda when it crashed into a utility pole about 2 a.m. Monday, said Trooper Richard Hendrickson. "The armadillo survived the crash," Hendrickson deadpanned. "He fled the scene."Trooper D.S. Gould, who investigated the crash, suspects the driver may have dozed off."I don't think he saw an armadillo," Gould said. "If he saw anything, it was probably a possum."So next time you're driving along the highway or looking across the yard, it may be a turtle or a possum on the horizon. But then again, maybe not.Spot an armadillo?

Apple

Europe banks dogged by low capital, poor business model
WHAT is wrong with Europe's banks? The short answer is that the sector is too large, has too little capital, and contains too many players that lack a viable long-term business model. It is the combination of the last two factors - an overabundance of banks with no sustainable way to turn a profit - that constitutes the most serious and most difficult problem. The banking sector's size is a cause for concern because, with total liabilities amounting to more than 250 per cent of the eurozone's GDP, any major problem could overburden public budgets. In short, the banking sector in Europe might be too big to be saved.Undercapitalisation can be cured by an infusion of new equity. But the larger the banking sector, the more difficult this might become. More important, it makes no sense to put new capital into banks that cannot return profits for the foreseeable future.Southern Europe's difficulties are well known, but they differ from country to country. In Spain, banks have historically issued 30-year mortgages whose interest rates are indexed to interbank rates such as Euribor, with a small spread (often under 100 basis points) fixed for the mortgage's tenure. This was a profitable model when Spanish banks could refinance themselves at a spread much lower than 100 basis points. Today, however, Spanish banks - especially those most heavily engaged in domestic mortgage lending -?must pay a much higher spread over interbank rates to secure new funding. Many local Spanish banks can thus stay afloat only because they refinance a large share of their mortgage book via the European Central Bank (ECB). But reliance on cheap central bank (re)financing does not represent a viable business model. In Italy, the difficulties arise from banks' continued lending to domestic companies, especially small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs), while GDP has stagnated. Even before the eurozone crisis erupted in 2010, the productivity of capital investment in Italy was close to zero. The current recession has exposed this low productivity, with the failure of many SMEs leading to large losses for the banks, whose funding costs, meanwhile, have increased. It is thus difficult to see how Italian banks can return to profitability (and how the country can resume economic growth) unless the allocation of capital is changed radically. There are problems north of the Alps too. In Germany, banks earn close to nothing on the hundreds of billions of euros of excess liqu迷你倉新蒲崗dity that they have deposited at the ECB. But their funding costs are not zero. German banks might be able to issue securities at very low rates, but these rates are still higher than what they earn on their ECB deposits. Moreover, they must maintain an extensive - and thus expensive - domestic retail network to collect the savings deposits from which they are not profiting.Of course, some banks will always do better than others, just as some will suffer more than others from negative trends. It is thus essential to analyse the situation of each bank separately. But it is clear that in an environment of slow growth, low interest rates and high risk premia, many banks must struggle to survive.Unfortunately, the problem cannot be left to the markets. A bank without a viable business model does not shrink gradually and then disappear. Its share price might decline towards zero, but its retail customers will be blissfully unaware of its difficulties. Other creditors, too, will continue to provide financing, because they expect the (national) authorities will intervene - either by providing emergency funding or by arranging a merger. Recent official tough talk in the EU about "bailing in" bank creditors has not impressed markets much, not least because the new rules on potentially imposing losses on creditors are supposed to enter into force only in 2018.Starting next year, when it takes over authority for bank supervision, the ECB will review the quality of banks' assets. But it will be unable to review the longer- term viability of banks' business models. Current owners will resist to the end any dilution of their control; and no national authority is likely to admit that their national "champions" lack a plausible path to financial viability.Keeping a weak banking system afloat has high economic costs. Banks with too little capital, or those without a viable business model, tend to continue lending to their existing customers, even if these loans are doubtful, and to restrict lending to new companies or projects. This misallocation of capital hampers any recovery and dims longer-term growth prospects. What should be done is clear enough: recapitalise much of the sector and restructure those parts without a viable business model - something unlikely to happen soon. Unfortunately, until it does, Europe is unlikely to recover fully from its current slump. - Project SyndicateThe writer is director of the Center for European Policy Studies迷你倉出租
