Vice President to visit Savannah's port
Source: Savannah Morning News, Ga. Aug. 30--Vice President Joe Biden next month will stop in Savannah to visit the port just ahead of a trip abroad that will include touring the Panama Canal expansion project. The White House on Thursday announced Biden would visit the ports in Savannah and Charleston on Sept. 16 just before he leaves for Panama and Mexico, where he will meet with those countries' presidents to discuss their economic relationships.During the vice president's visit, the Georgia Ports Authority will showcase what the nation's fourth-busiest port has to offer, said Jamie McCurry, its senior director of administration and governmental affairs."We look forward to the vice president's visit next month," McCurry said. "The visit will provide an opportunity to see firsthand the world class facilities at the Port of Savannah and the urgency of completing the Savannah harbor deepening, a project of great importance to the continued economic recovery for the United States, particularly in support of the National Export Initiative."Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson echoed McCurry's statement."We are very delighted that the vice president will be here and get the opportunity to tour the port and see the significance of it," Jackson said."It's going to be a very good chance for him to get out there and see firsthand the importance of this (harbor deepening) project."Currently, the estimated $652 million project to deepen the Savannah River from 42 to 47 feet is awaiting congressional approval. Dredging the river, Georgia Ports Authority officials have said, is necessary to allow access to larger ships that will be in use once the Panama Canal project is completed, likely in 2015.That expansion, according to the White House, "will nearly triple the capacity of the 自存倉anal," and the massive new ships "will create increased opportunity in the region and can open whole new export markets for U.S. businesses."Biden will meet with Panama's President Ricardo Martinelli "to emphasize our mutual interest in improving integration in Central America as a means to accelerate regional economic growth."In Mexico, the vice president is scheduled to meet with President Enrique Pena Nieto, and he "will launch the U.S.-Mexico high level economic dialogue and participate in an education event highlighting the Bilateral Forum on Education, Innovation and Research," according to the White House.President Barack Obama has recently expressed his support for modernizing America's ports, including in Savannah. While touring the Port of Jacksonville in July the president said "...we need modern ports so we can move more goods made in America out to the rest of the world."Obama has visited the Savannah-area twice during his presidency. In March 2010 he announced at Savannah Tech a federal rebates plan for people who retrofit their homes to save energy and famously dined at local eatery Mrs. Wilkes. In April 2012 the president visited Fort Stewart and announced an initiative to end aggressive marketing tactics used by some universities to deceive military veterans. The White House Thursday said additional details about Biden's trips would be released at a later date."I am just so happy the vice president is going to be here," Jackson said. "I hope he'll get an opportunity to see Savannah, but it will be a great day for the city and we are truly honored that he's coming here."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Savannah Morning News (Savannah, Ga.) Race On officials optimistic as third Grand Prix arrives
Source: The Baltimore SunAug. 30--In the command center of the Grand Prix of Baltimore, Tim Mayer, the race's general manager, fielded a few phone calls, answering a couple of questions. But that was it.Preparations for the Grand Prix were running several hours ahead of schedule the day before Friday's qualifying races. In the cavernous room -- Mayer asked that its location not be divulged -- police and others studied 15 big-screen televisions showing camera feeds and maps."It's not like it was last year," he said. "That we did with sheer energy, breakneck until the very end."Now in its third year, the three-day racing festival begins at 8 a.m. Friday with practices for the various circuits that will race Saturday and Sunday. Ticket sales remain on pace, Mayer said, without elaborating. Seats are available; Race On, the event organizer, said it expects a large walk-up crowd, especially if there's no rain in the forecast."A lot of our final push is going to depend on what people see when they turn on the television," Mayer said. Most forecasters are calling for a chance of thunderstorms Sunday, during the weekend's premier event, an IndyCar race. Race On purchased "rain insurance," but it will kick in only if there's a "deluge," Mayer said.Rain or not, residents and businesses around downtown are coping with the inconvenience of a 2.4-mile, high-speed racetrack occupying critical crossroads around the Inner Harbor. Traffic was snarled Thursday. Some residents left town, some businesses shut down, but many others have embraced the racing festival.Mayer has led Race On's efforts to become a better neighbor. He largely devised a way to shorten the time needed to build the track from more than a month to 21 days in a way that limited road closures. His goal this year is to show that the race can appeal to racing fans as well as families and those who enjoy a festive atmosphere. He has emphasized adding entertainment and amenities for a more diverse crowd while making the operation less inconvenient for the city around it.But by Thursday morning's rush hour, the track's impact was undeniable. Cars coming into the city off Interstate 95 immediately got bogged down in traffic. It took Pavan Bhatia more than an hour to reach the California Tortilla restaurant he owns on Pratt Street from the highway.Bhatia refused to pay the $5,000 race organizers wanted in order to give his patrons a clear view of the race. A blue scrim covered the fence outside his courtyard."It's just not worth the investment," he said. "People are coming for the race, not to spend here."He'd had high hopes for the race the first year, projecting sales of $65,000, which is what he usually does during a large convention like Otakon. But revenue fell short and then plummeted more than 50 percent last year. The Grand Prix has been a boon, however, to the nearby Pratt Street Ale House, which happily paid for a view of the race, said general manager Jorbie Clark."We're all for it," Clark said. "To have an event that is watched around the world on what would be a slow weekend, I don't get all the negativity about it. You've got to have things like this if you want your city to be vibrant for the people and businesses."Lana Jo Hill, an Upper Fells Point resident who works in Federal Hill, said the race simply causes too much disruption in the city. Her commute home Thursday took 40 minutes, and the race is impossible to escape."It doesn't matter where you go in the city," she said. "Head over to Canton, and it still sounds like there's a hive of angry bees nearby."Many of the 1,271 workers at T. Rowe Price's corporate headquarters on East Pratt Street will work elsewhere Friday, though the office will be open for those who want to come in, said Brian Lewbart, a spokesman for the investment management firm."We've offered people flexible work arrangements to work remotely, and for many people that means from home," Lewbart said.Others will work at the company's Owings Mills campus or at a disaster recovery center in Linthicum that will open Friday to accommodate workers. The backup center is reserved for emergencies or occasions such as the race, he said."I think it's safe to say the majority of associates will not be working in mini storagehe office, and that has as much to do with location, being literally right on the course and the noise of the cars, as with commuting and road closures," Lewbart said. "We literally front the course."Energy supplier Constellation, owned by Chicago-based Exelon, also is keeping its downtown offices open, but "employees have been advised to discuss alternative work arrangements with their supervisors as necessary," spokeswoman Kelly Biemer said in an email.Verizon's office at 1 E. Pratt St. has been mostly empty since Wednesday, after employees were told they would not be able to get into the parking garage after 7 a.m. that day, said Sandy Arnette, a spokeswoman. The office's workers have settled temporarily at area Verizon offices or worked from home, she said."We are in the center of the racetrack, and you can't get access to the garage," Arnette said. But thanks to laptops and smartphones, "we can get our jobs done anywhere."Usha Salon & Day Spa on East Fort Avenue in Federal Hill no longer tries to stay open during Grand Prix weekend."We tried to remain open once, and it was a mess," said Gayatri Gupta, an owner. "To start with, our staff couldn't get in. It was a mess for them to get in, and then the customers couldn't get in. It was not worth it for us to keep the business open and go through that expense."The salon will close more than an hour early on Friday, around 6 p.m., and not open at all on Saturday.Race patrons must submit any bags brought into the course for searches by guards manning the entrances, a new measure prompted by the Boston Marathon bombing, but that's about it for new security, Mayer said."This event isn't as porous as an event like a marathon, obviously, and we felt good about our existing plan," he said. "That being the case, we're still going to have people being not too shy about looking through the bags carried in."J.P. Grant, the Columbia financier who shouldered the financial burden of running the race, spent part of Thursday walking the streets and talking with potential customers. Grant has said he expects to lose money on the race again this year, but not as much. The future of the race depends on increased revenue and finding a date to run in the coming years. Events scheduled for M&T Bank Stadium and the Baltimore Convention Center in 2014 and 2015 have pushed the race from Labor Day, and Grant is working to find another weekend that could work."We're going to work it out," Mayer said. "Is there a percent chance that we can't find a date? Sure. But I really think that once we sit down and have all the facts, we will find a time to run it."On Thursday, Mayer addressed a group from New Jersey involved in trying to plan a Formula One race in Weehawken, N.J., explaining the complicated web of entities involved in putting on Baltimore's Grand Prix. The New Jersey group has struggled with many of the same issues that have hindered the race here: lack of financing, public opposition and the need for sponsorship dollars."You guys know it. You can't just say there's going to be a race," he said. "There's so much to deal with. But it can be incredibly rewarding."Baltimore's race has taken a "quantum leap" toward fulfilling the promise that city leaders saw when they approved the race in 2010, Mayer said. A year ago, he spent the Thursday before the race scurrying around the site, checking every facet of the operation. His slower place this year shows the race operation can continue to evolve and become less difficult for the city, he said.Grant said he'll watch this year's event with clear eyes. For a businessman with no experience in racing -- or running a big-time sports event -- last year was bewildering. He now feels better able to evaluate whether the Grand Prix is right for the city."Hey, you've got to try things," Grant said. "This city has so much to work with. It has so much promise. So let's try things like this. Let's see what we can build."Baltimore Sun reporter Lorraine Mirabella contributed to this article.chris.korman@baltsun.comtwitter.com/chriskormanBaltimore Grand Prix 2013 news from The Baltimore SunCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Baltimore Sun Visit The Baltimore Sun at .baltimoresun.com Distributed by MCT Information Servicesself storage

Front door access returned
Source: The Portales News-Tribune, N.儲存倉M.Aug. 30--Business owners on Second Street in the downtown area will get some relief now that front door access to their shops has been returned as construction officials for the U.S. 70 project are shifting gears to expedite their time in that area. But construction will be ongoing downtown, one of the more congested areas of the highway, until at least late-October as U.S. 70 reconstruction project officials say they are only halfway through the second phase of the project, which tracks from Avenue C to Main.Constructors Inc., Project Manager John Guldemann said workers will shift traffic from the outer lane to the inner lane of First Street today, which will help the flow of traffic around the Roosevelt County Courthouse Square but block front door access to City Hall and the city's post office."Traffic will be moved over on First Street to the lane we just built and removals will be taking place from Avenue C to Main on First Street," Guldemann said Thursday.Guldemann said workers will also be pouring concrete the rest of this week and next week in front of businesses on Second Street before shifting traffic on that side of the highway in a few weeks.Guldemann is aiming to complete the $8.3 million project by December but another state Department of Transportation official said in June the project could extend well into 2014.Guldemann said he's combated weather delays with better preparation this time around as compared to last year."We have additional crews here that we didn't have before. Immediately when it rains we've been pumping water so it shortens the time we have to wait," said Guldemann as examples of how his crews have made up for lost time. "We also get our concrete pours done at night."Guldemann said workers are essentially complete with phase I of the project, which is the stretch of the highway from avenues K through C, but workers still have to go back and stripe the roads and clean up small portions that need corrections."With the downtown area, the biggest challenge is it came at a critical time of the year where weather hit us," Guldemann said, totaling up to more than two months of weather days. "Our biggest things we've changed is w迷你倉價錢rking hours, we've been working a lot more at night. When we expect weather, we prepare for it a lot better."Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karl Terry said local business owners have experienced struggles with the construction."Overall, what we've heard is it's a lot of hassle but we got through it. There's been an effect to their businesses but they've all done extra things to promote their businesses," Terry said. "It's been pretty good, not everything's been perfect but it's been pretty good. We had blips here and there, but overall communication has been pretty good."Terry said because construction has been at the front door of his building and other businesses for a while, people have gotten used to it, though it's been a burden on owners."It's just a matter of something that has to be done. We've had our back door open so people have learned to come through our back door," Terry said.Terry said the lane change on First Street will make it easier for motorists to go around the square."We're used to using our courthouse square as a roundabout," Terry said.Chuck Abbott, who owns Big League Sports on Avenue A between First and Second streets, said because there is no direct access to his business from those main streets, his business has been impacted."My walk-in traffic stopped 75 to 80 percent. No one can get down my road; that's a lot of what has to do with my situation," Abbott said. "It's just a hassle. Most people are just avoiding this area like the plague."Abbott said during this time as football seasons across the county begin, he sees a lot of business."I look out my window almost all day every day, I can tell traffic is almost way off than it normally is," Abbott said. "There's isn't one person I've talked to down here that hasn't felt it, we're all in the same boat."Abbott said he feels the lane change on First Street will finally give him a break."This is a key time, August and September has a lot of walk-in traffic significantly higher because of the sports season," Abbott said.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Portales News-Tribune (Clovis, N.M.) New pit bull rules eyed
Source: Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, IowaAug. 30--WATERLOO, Iowa -- City leaders may tighten the leash on pit bull owners.Waterloo Mayor Buck Clark said animal control staff members are working on a "very restrictive ordinance for pit bulls" in the wake of a brutal attack earlier this week that left two people injured."It's something we need to react to," he said.City Council members are scheduled to discuss the possible ordinance changes during a short work session at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday. Public comment typically is not taken during work sessions, but any ordinance change would need to come back at a regular council meeting for approval.Councilwoman Carolyn Cole said council members are already receiving emails urging the city not to target the breed despite Tuesday's high-profile dog attack on Riehl Street.Vivien Brookman, 65, was at Allen Hospital on Thursday recovering from about 200 dog bites, while 13-year-old William McNealy suffered bites and scratches after both were attacked by three dogs while walking on a public street.Police shot and killed a large pit bull involved in the incident while an 8-month-old male Boston terrier mix and a 1-year-old female pit bu迷你倉價錢l were detained by Waterloo Animal Control. While some communities have adopted outright bans on pit bulls, Clark said the ordinance being developed by Sandie Greco, who oversees animal control for the city, and Maria Tiller, an animal control officer, would still allow people to own the breed under more restrictive circumstances.Among ideas being considered, the ordinance would require all pit bulls to be microchipped for identification and would create a separate dog license for the breed. He said the rules could require all pit bulls to be spayed or neutered and could place limits on the number of pit bulls a person can own.Current city zoning ordinances limit the number of adult dogs at a household to four. But there is nothing limiting specific breeds.Meanwhile, Clark is expecting to present certificates of heroism at Tuesday's council meeting to three individuals who came to help those being attacked by the dogs this week: William McNealy, KaRon Bennett and Tanner Lee Cornwell.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (Waterloo, Iowa) Visit Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier (Waterloo, Iowa) at .wcfcourier.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉

Eastport awarded $6M grant for breakwater funding
Source: Bangor Daily News, MaineAug.文件倉 30--BANGOR, Maine -- Sen. Susan Collins, along with U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, announced Friday that the Port of Eastport will receive a $6 million grant. The grant is part of the latest round of the National Infrastructure Investments program's funding, also known as the Tiger program."This announcement is great news for a Labor Day weekend because it will mean more jobs and economic opportunity for Mainers," Collins said in a statement. "Improving our nation's transportation infrastructure is vital to the safe and efficient movement of freight and people, and it is critical to our economy. The Port of Eastport is significant infrastructure for economic development and job creation in Washington County and the State of Maine."The grant will support the replacement of the town's breakwater, which was built to protect the port from waves. The failing breakwater now in place has led to significant damage to the port of entry. The new barrier will use composite materials to strengthen its protection.Eastport, an important port of entry for commercial ships, serves as the safe harbor for the vessels of the U.S. Coast Guard station."I think it's so appropriate that this announcement comes Labor Day weekend," said Collins, speaking with the Bangor Daily News by phone from her camp in Enfield, "because it is about jobs."The project will provide valuable engineering and construction jobs that are "much needed ... when our economy is still struggling," she said. The reconstruction of the breakwater will bolster the presence of the Coast Guard as well as the region's lobstermen and its commercial fishing industry, observed Collins. In addition, it will help Eastport's efforts to attract cruise vess存倉ls, as well as freighters."So it produces both the near-term jobs, in terms of construction, but also provides a foundation for long-term employment as well," said Collins. The grant program is extraordinarily competitive, according to Collins, ranking member of the transportation appropriations subcommittee."So I think it speaks well for the importance of this project," she added."The Eastport Port Authority is extremely pleased to learn that our TIGER application for the Breakwater Rehabilitation has been awarded funding," said Eastport Port Authority executive director Chris Gardner. "We cannot thank Senator Collins enough for the direct personal attention that she provided to this project from day one through the final days of consideration."According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 600 applications totaling $9 billion were submitted.Engineering and design work is underway, noted Gardner, with roughly $300,000 in funding provided by the port authority and $100,000 in state funds. The engineering and design should be completed by year's end, he said, and construction work would begin in 2014.The repairs will take "the better part of a year if not slightly longer," said Gardner. The project will greatly benefit the region and Washington County, said Gardner, a member of the Washington County Commission. It will pay economic benefits "for several generations to come," he said. The economic impact goes far beyond the city of Eastport and the port authority, he pointed out."It is truly one of the bright spots of this county, and we're glad we can rebuild it."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Bangor Daily News (Bangor, Maine) Visit the Bangor Daily News (Bangor, Maine) at .bangordailynews.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉

Judge orders mental evaluation for alleged South Hills shooter
Source: The Charleston Gazette, W.mini storageVa.Aug. 30--CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A man accused of going on a shooting rampage in an upscale Charleston subdivision will undergo a mental evaluation before a judge determines whether he should be let out on bail.On Friday, Kanawha Circuit Judge Carrie Webster ordered Mark Bramble, 49, to Mildred Mitchell-Bateman Hospital in Huntington for a mental evaluation to determine not only whether he is fit to stand trial, but also whether Bramble is a danger to himself or others.Bramble, a former attorney with the state attorney general's office, allegedly fired almost 50 rounds from several guns inside and out the windows of his home in the Sherwood Forest subdivision on Aug. 12.Bramble also allegedly pointed guns and fired at police. He is charged with attempted murder and wanton endangerment. His wife told police he had been agitated in the days leading up to the shooting and was apparently suffering hallucinations on the morning of the incident. Also Friday, Webster granted a request by Bramble's attorneys to have Kanawha County prosecutor Mark Plants and his staff recused from the case. Plants said he lives within 100 yards of Bramble; he was home at the time of the incident and heard gunshots. At the hearing, Plants agreed with defense lawyer Michael Payne that he should not continue to prosecute the case."It's not whether [prosecutors] can move forward objectively, it's whether there's an appearance of impropriety," Plants told the judge."I think that a reasonable person could conclude I'm a witness in this case,"self storagePlants said -- or, he said, even a potential victim. The West Virginia Prosecuting Attorneys Institute will appoint a special prosecutor to take over Bramble's case. Plants said a new prosecutor can probably be appointed within days.Bramble's initial bond was set at $200,000 cash, an amount his attorneys have been trying to get lowered. At one point, Magistrate Jack Pauley ordered bail reduced to $25,000, but Circuit Judge Jennifer Bailey ordered it reinstated after prosecutors objected. The case was transferred to Webster after Bailey and several other Kanawha County judges recused themselves.Webster said Friday she would wait to set a final bond until after the mental evaluation. The order sending Bramble to Mildred Mitchell-Bateman satisfied both defense lawyers and prosecutors."All we've been asking this entire time is for my client to go to a mental hygiene hearing and be committed to a mental institution," said Payne.Plants said prosecutors objected to a lower bond and a mental hygiene petition for fear that Bramble might be back on the streets quickly and be a potential danger to others. The judge's order to send Bramble directly to the hospital for evaluation assures Bramble is in a secure location while his competence and potential danger to himself or others are determined, the prosecutor said.Reach Rusty Marks at rustymarks@wvgazette.com or 304-348-1215.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Charleston Gazette (Charleston, W.Va.) The best of all worlds
The BMW X3 xDrive20d's small but efficient turbodiesel engine makes it the cost-effective alternative. By Samuel EeFEW cars are all-rounders that score well in terms of price, performance and packaging, but the BMW X3 xDrive20d comes close. The X3 is a roomy crossover that is versatile and dynamic, and here in Singapore, it is available with either a two-litre or three-litre petrol engine - both turbocharged - driving all four wheels.Until now, that is. The latest variant to arrive by year-end is the BMW X3 xDrive20d with the little "d" suffix to denote its two-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel.Originating from the US, where all BMW X models are built, it has a relatively small diesel engine that still manages to deliver a healthy amount of torque - 380 Newton-metres - to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. There is good low-end torque to ensure this Sports Activity Vehicle has acceptable overtaking abilities. But with its kerb weight crossing the 1,700 kg mark, it hardly endows the X3 xDrive20d with blinding acceleration. Zero to 100 kmh takes 8.5 seconds, with the xDrive system to provide optimum traction when moving off.By varying the distribution of torque between the two axles, xDrive also ensures that the tall (1.66 metres) X3 remains surefooted in fairly fast corners.Generally, the X3 is fun to drive. As with most BMW models, it has a responsive steering and a sporty chassis for excellent driving dynamics - even for an SUV. Only the turbodiesel's lack of oomph at the upper end restrains it from more character迷你倉stic BMW performance.Instead, the engine's most important attribute has to be its frugal nature. BMW says it sips fuel at the rate of 5.6 litres per 100 km under the combined cycle, or an impressive 17.9 km per litre. And because the diesel engine is relatively small, its cost is also lower, thus helping to reduce the X3's sticker price.Overall, the BMW X3 xDrive20d offers one of the best combinations of price, power and efficiency. At 4.65 metres in length and 1.88 metres in width, this second-generation X3 is longer, wider and a bit taller than the first-generation car. Its interior is spacious and well-made, with a large boot that can be further expanded by folding down the rear seatbacks. The 2,810 mm wheelbase is 15 mm longer than before, thus benefiting rear legroom. While its sporty positioning may result in a slightly firmer ride, the back seat is not an uncomfortable place to be.Perhaps the most obvious difference between the X3 xDrive20d and other petrol-engined X3s is the sound emitting from under the hood - the diesel clatter can be especially obvious when the windows are down.Still, with its good price - expected to be slightly higher than the petrol-powered X3 xDrive20i with the same range of options - and excellent fuel efficiency, it could be the best-value luxury SUV.samuelee@sph.com.sgSPECSBMW X3 xDrive20dEngine 1,995cc inline-4 turbodieselTransmission 8-speed autoMax power 184 hp @ 4,000 rpmMax torque 380 Nm @ 1,750-2,750 rpm0-100 kmh 8.5 secsTop speed 210 kmhCO2 emissions 149 g/kmDistributor Performance MotorsTel 6319-0100自存倉

Culture Evolution(文化進化)吧,It is evolving。 「Banksy? A n d y W a r h o l的作品是屬於P a r a m o u n t 系列。 F a b r i kGallery,這天的四面牆壁全是AndyW a r h o l 的作品。
