As a keen cyclist and recent returnee to Hong Kong, I was pleasantly surprised to find the booklet, "Your Guide to Hiking and Cycling in Hong Kong", on display at the tourist information office.存倉 Inside are details of the two main cycling paths in Hong Kong, showing it is possible to ride all the way from Sha Tin to Tai Mei Tuk along Tolo Harbour.I also understand that work is progressing on an extension to the present provision to link the network all the way to Sheung Shui, and the government has a section of its website promoting the sport. This is excellent news for cyclists and is certainly in step with a global rise in the interest in cycling as a sport and a leisure activity. However, I wonder whether the provision of these cycle paths is entirely positive, as it restricts cycling to a very small area and means motorised traffic will continue to dominate the roads. For example, on arrival at Tai Mei Tuk, some riders may be tempted to test themselves by continuing on towards Bride's Pool with its challenging gradients and pretty, shaded road. In fact, the route from Tai Po t儲存 Sha Tau Kok is very popular with more serious amateur riders and those training for competitions.Unfortunately, the section between Luk Keng and Tai Mei Tuk is used as a race track by a small number of people who drive at very high speeds in high-performance sports cars, putting themselves, and more vulnerable cyclists and walkers, at significant risk. This could easily be prevented by having a mixture of greater police presence, speed cameras and vigorous enforcement of speed limits, but there appears to be a lack of will on the part of the authorities to effectively enforce the law as it applies to these people.Elsewhere, Hong Kong's roads offer access to some beautiful landscapes, from Tai Mo Shan to the Sai Kung peninsula and down as far as the south of Hong Kong Island. A co-ordinated and sensitive re-education of drivers, together with the introduction of widespread cycle lanes, would make these routes safer and more enjoyable for cycling. If Hong Kong is serious about promoting cycling, the current building programme should just be the beginning.Stephen Potts, Sheung Shui迷你倉
