Consumer electronics behemoth Sony will stop selling and manufacturing its VAIO computers after the first quarter.新蒲崗迷你倉 Japan Industrial Partners, a private firm specialized in turning around distressed businesses, will take over the brand. Meanwhile, Sony will cut 5,000 jobs by year-end. Sony's share price increased more than 8 percent since the news broke. Commoditization of personal computers is nothing new. Once the most valuable components, parts such as the CPU - or central processing unit - and memory, have seen prices steadily fall. Lowering entry barriers brought in new players, especially from emerging markets like China, such as computer maker Lenovo, the No1 PC producer. It is worth noting that quite recently investors showed renewed interest in makers of brand-name PCs. Dell, the poster boy of the 1990s, went private four months ago and is now held by its founder Michael Dell and a consortium of private investors. HP, once rumored to be poised to spin off its costly PC unit, reversed its decision. Without a doubt, the PC is history. The interesting question is whether there is hidden value that onl迷你倉 insiders can see. There is no reason why they cannot compete in the tablet and smartphone market. Unfortunately, these products are becoming commoditized too. If it is not about tablets and smartphones, what else can save them from becoming irrelevant? These companies can reinvent themselves to compete against start-ups such as Fitbit and Jawbone in the market for wearable gadgets, or simply acquire the promising ones before they become too big to buy. Another option is to develop the market for connected household appliances. Philips considers the wi-fi-enabled Hue LED lighting system its hope for growth. Nest Labs, recently acquired by Google, markets connected thermostats and smoke detectors. An even more likely market yet to be fully explored is that for connected home audio-visual equipment. Though most TVs sold in the past few years were marketed as internet-enabled, these functions were rarely used. ``Internet of things'' is certainly the next big thing and those coming up with a coherent ecosystem will undoubtedly be tomorrow's winner.
