Source: The Wisconsin State JournalDec.儲存 23--Feel like saving a life this holiday season? How about saving three lives? Then step right up Tuesday at the Alliant Energy Center for the annual Madison Holiday Blood Drive.True, you might not be saving a life on the spot. But there is no doubt that blood donations save lives every day, all across the country. The Wisconsin State Journal is proud to partner with WKOW-TV/Ch. 27 as sponsors of the annual Dec. 24 large-scale blood donation event in Madison. Thanks to hundreds of caring people who are willing to make a small sacrifice, this event is by far the biggest of the year for the American Red Cross' Badger Hawkeye Region, which serves most of Wisconsin and about half of Iowa. How big is this donation event? The average Red Cross blood drive pulls in about 29 pints. The goal for the Madison holiday event is 625 pints of blood.Red Cross officials estimate that each pint of donated blood has the potential to save three lives.Tuesday will mark the 28th annual event for the Dec. 24 blood drive in Madison. Over the past 27 years, the Red Cross has collected more than 19,000 pints of blood via this holiday event."It's really become a tradition for a lot of people and a lot of families," said Red Cross spokesman Brian Gomez. "Sometimes迷你倉we'll have three generations of one family come in to donate at the same time."The next-largest blood drive for the Badger Hawkeye chapter this year was in October at Lambeau Field, when the Red Cross collected 309 pints. It doesn't take long to donate blood; maybe an hour in total. That hour includes prep time and paperwork, the blood draw itself (about eight minutes) and a light snack afterward.Blood donors need to be 17 years old (or 16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. That's it. Just bring a photo ID, and step up and give. The event runs from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Exhibition Hall. The Badger Hawkeye region supports the blood needs of 34 hospitals in Wisconsin and Iowa. Those hospitals use lots of blood on a daily basis, just like hundreds of other hospitals across the country. In total, the Red Cross needs to collect 15,000 pints a day, every day, to keep up with hospital needs. That's a lot of blood, and we can't meet all that need here in Madison. But we can do our part, and that starts with 625 pints, or hopefully even more, on Tuesday.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, Wis.)
