Source: The News & Advance, Lynchburg, Va.迷你倉Dec. 22--O'shea Mayo, the speedy E.C. Glass guard, had already exited the game once with a cramp when, streaking toward the basket at break-neck speed, he slipped. The senior came down hard on one knee in the fourth quarter and never returned.By then, though, he had already proved a difference-maker.Often the shortest player on the court, Mayo corralled rebounds, hit runners in the lane and was often at the helm of Glass' 68-55 win over William Fleming in the nightcap of the Beacon Basketball Classic at E.C. Glass on Saturday. He finished part of a trio that combined for 47 points. Shawn Brown led all scorers with 18 points, Tai'he Jeter added 17 and Mayo finished with 12, before exiting at the 3:29 mark of the fourth quarter."His knee, he certainly tweaked it and it's bothering him," Glass coach Roy Roberson said. "We'll just have to wait and see."Mayo hit a 3-pointer to give Glass (4-1) the lead in the first quarter and finished with eight rebounds and four steals. Each time he was absent, the Hilltoppers were prone to turnovers."He was instrumental in facilitating what we were tying to do on the offensive end," Roberson said, "just trying to get everybody where they're supposed to be and keeping the game within control. It showed at times when he wasn't in the game."We were not as organized as we'd like to be. We were a little helter-skelter and a little chaotic and we certainly needed his leadership."Jeter upped his game just before the fourth quarter, with Glass up by 13. He hit four straight shots in a two-minute stretch, becoming the problem for which winless Fleming had no answer."We were just attacking the rim, finding the open man and filling the spaces on the floor," Jeter said. It's the junior's first year on the varsity team after showing off his skills at the JV level."Tai'he Jeter is probably as talented a kid offensively as I've ever coached," Roberson said. "He's just got to adjust to the game and improve with his decision-making."Fleming (0-4) was led by Steven Jones (17 points) and Tyrell Adams (13 points). The Colonels cut the Glass lead to six with just over two minutes remaining, but Brown buried a baseline trey to quell their hopes."[We need] just more hustle," said junior forward Jamel Hale, who finished with eight points, "better defense and playing together."William Byrd 72, Jefferson Forest 56William Byrd used a 22-point third quarter to open up a 13-point lead that Jefferson Forest couldn't come back from and then held steady in the fourth for their fourth win of the season.Byrd was led by Marvey'o Otey and Zach Hill, who finished with 16 points apiece. Senior guard Josh Marcus added nine points, eight rebounds and four assists. The Terriers shot 42 percent from the floor.Malik Stewart led JF (5-2) with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Hunter McConville added 10.Marcus儲存倉missed Byrd's first few games with an injury, while two other players -- Rustin Horne (11 points) and Jake Beekman (five points) also returned recently to the lineup."They played well," Byrd coach Kevin Tuck said of Hill and Otey. "Marvey'o struggled a little bit from beyond the 3-point line tonight but he got things going by attacking the basket and made some nice plays."Forest had just three field goals in the first four minutes and 20 seconds of the third quarter."They're a tough match for anybody when you're on the defensive side," JF coach Paul Redgate said. "They're the type of team that they have five players that could step up. It was a tough match defensively for us."Fluvanna 49, Rustburg 48With his team trailing by three points and the seconds slipping away, Matt Kimble was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer before the buzzer sounded. The senior hit the first two shots but his third bounced off the back iron and longtime Fluvanna County coach Munro Rateau earned his 500 th career win as the Flucos narrowly escaped with the victory over the Red Devils in the second game of the afternoon.Fluvanna freshman Aamir Simms led all scorers with 22 points, while teammate Goddience Flannigan added 15.Kimble led Rustburg with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, but the Red Devils came out flat after the break, scoring just nine points in the third quarter and failing to hit a field goal until the 3:34 mark.Rustburg (3-3) took a 30-17 lead into the locker room, but the Flucos (3-3) went on a 30-18 run to close the game. Senior forward Jordan Lawhorn added nine points for the Red Devils, while Simms hit four treys. The Flucos earned the win despite committing 23 turnovers.Rockbridge 78, Liberty 57Devonta Branche and Omar Habwe teamed up for 43 points and Rockbridge flew by Liberty in the Saturday opener. The Minutemen downed 11 3-pointers -- including six from senior forward Chris Sharrett -- but were outscored 20-6 in the opening eight minutes.Sharrett led Liberty (2-3) with 20 points and junior guard Dajur Mobley added 10. Branche finished with 26 points, while Habwe, the tall, lanky freshman, added 17. It was the second straight win for the Wildcats (2-4), who also upended Amherst in the Beacon opener on Friday.Tunstall 52, Brookville 45 (OT)Senior guard Tyler Clay scored 19 points, but Brookville managed just three points in overtime and lost to Tunstall in the Beacon's only overtime game.
