"We are getting stronger every day. Last year they pushed us around a lot easier and we would try as hard as we could. We still try as hard, but now it's a lot easier to push back. We have a lot more confidence this year."Central head coach Brodie Kelly was pleased with how the win came to be."I thought it was a really good win for us again that will make us better in the long run," Kelly said. "It's similar to the Laurel game (last weekend) when we got down late, didn't panic, stayed the course and made the plays late in the game. It was really big for our character. We played some really good basketball games, but we know it's December and everyone is going to get better."The teams came out patient and methodical in their approaches as each team hit a three and a deuce with Stevi getting a 6-5 lead early thanks to an additional free toss.At 3:08 Chad Peterson drilled a sweet trey off of a savvy drive and kick out by Dalton Session to put Central up 10-8.Dylan Goodell and Ferriter offered some nice short range makings and Central led 14-10.The Maroons led 16-12 after the first eight minutes.Central then took advantage of Stevi's first foray into its bench and scored the initial five points of the second quarter with a Danny Peoples' trey and a Ferriter lay in.Then Ferriter brought the home crowd to roar with his second long range splash and Central led 24-12 at 6:03 of the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets immediately responded out of a time out by scoring the next five points to pull within 24-17 in under a minute.Of course Maroon Guldseth didn't approve and stemmed the tide with a three and a sweet as apple pie cross, pop, and pull midrange two.Central maintained their rhythm off of Guldseth's smooth play and pumped the lead back to 12.A lot of their success came by way of mounting pressure on Stevi's point guard Jared Schultz who didn't answer the challenge in the game's first 16 minutes.Central led 37-25 at the break."We just came out and the crowd was just nuts," Guldseth said. "We get rolling and they get right behind us. It's tough for teams to come back, but they did it."Nate Bolstad came out after a scoreless first half and made himself known in a hurry out of the locker room. First a 'nice to meet you' throw down dunk preceded a triple in the eye of Jesse Sims to keep Central in command early in the second half. But the Stevi boys do represent the defending state Class A champs and a rally would be in order as they cut the gap to nine. Then a Christopher Bergman t迷你倉將軍澳ree at 1:25 brought the YellowJackets within 46-40.Two Guldseth free throws helped Central to a 50-42 lead after three quarters.Stevi made another push to start the fourth as a Schultz layup and a Bergman three brought the champs to within 50-47 a minute into the final period.Stevi pulled within 53-52 on a Jace Omlid three at 4:40 and the Central faithful began to sit a little more uneasier.A Schultz penetration ended in a pretty pirouette that led to a layup and one to give the Jackets, their first lead since early on, 55-53 with four minutes left to go."They started switching screens on us and they did that last year against us and it gave us trouble," Guldseth said. "We prepared for it, but its so much different against those big athletic guys. They are as good on-ball defenders as they are off-ball defenders. It's tough to drive by them."The teams see-sawed back and forth for the next two minutes and two Ferriter free throws at 2:38 put Central up 58-57.Then Ferriter went man child in the post for a power layup and a 60-57 edge with 1:56 left. With a minute left and nursing a 60-58 edge Central tried to milk the clock but turned it over.It would cost.Schultz would pulverize a down the chute three and Stevi took a 61-60 lead with :41.2.Bolstad then got fouled on a drive to the tin and made both free throws with :33.2 to put the defenders of the MAC back up 62-61.Schultz would look for the winner but a wild, off balance drive fell naught and Central held. Guldseth, fouled on the ensuing scrum, hit two free throws to make it 64-61 with :16.8 and inched the Maroon senior closer to winning the battle of top Southwestern A guards.Stevi then came back with the intent to tie, but two off balance threes were nowhere near sending the game into overtime and Central was headed into the break unbeaten and feeling good about its season performance to date.Schultz led Stevi with 18 points while Omlid added 12 points and Gavlak finished with 11 points.Ferriter's 16 points paced Central, while Guldeth added 11 points, and Bolstad finished with all 11 of his points coming in the final 16 minutes."This is huge and we are going into the break with a lot of confidence," Ferriter said of the strong start to the season. "We need to get a lot better because we aren't as good as we can be. We just have to focus on not getting too high or too low."Kelly feels things are looking good as well...at least through the first two weeks of the season."We have a long way to go," Kelly said. "But I really like how we are playing so far."Stevi 12 13 17 19 -- 61CENTRAL 16 21 13 14 -- 64STEVIZach Gavlak 4 3-3 11, Jared Schultz 7 2-3 18, Jesse Sims 3 2-4 8, Jace Omlid 4 1-1 12, Chance Coleman 2 0-0 4, Christopher Bergman 2 0-0, 6, Chris Lords 0 2-3 2.
