Source: The News & Advance, Lynchburg, Va.self storageDec. 19--A handful of Lynchburg area landmarks are vying for inclusion among the top 100 examples of Virginian architecture as part of an online contest organized by the Virginia Center for Architecture. The contest marks the 100th anniversary of the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects in 2014.Through Dec. 27, interested voters can visit .vacelebrates.org and vote for up to 100 of the 250 bridges, buildings, monuments and memorials nominated by architects throughout the state that "represent some of the best of Virginia's rich cultural heritage," according to the center. The top 100 will be featured in an exhibition at the Virginia Center for Architecture in Richmond opening April 10, 2014."If we were to make this list it would be huge," said Michelle Hamrick, property manager for the Allied Arts Building in downtown Lynchburg, the Hill City's first skyscraper and one of the area landmarks on the list.Hamrick said the building's current owners are focused on promoting Allied Arts not only as an active business center, but a historical destination. The architectural distinction would help accomplish that goal."For us it means a lot, because in the past few years with the new owners, the history of this building is really important迷利倉to them," she said.Lynchburg Courthouse and Monument Terrace, also downtown, are nominated, as is Point of Honor. In Bedford County, Poplar Forest and the National D-Day Memorial are competing for recognition. Mead's Tavern and Red Hill in Campbell County, the McClean House in Appomattox County and Sweet Briar House in Amherst County round out the local nominees.Nominees from other parts of the state range from the traditional -- the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg, built in the early 1700s as the official residence of Virginia's royal governors -- to the unconventional, like Rockbridge County's Foamhenge, a replica of Stonehenge built in 2004 and constructed completely out of Styrofoam.Karol Lawson, museum and art galleries director at Sweet Briar, said any recognition like this is a "vote of confidence" for caretakers of historic buildings in the commonwealth."We take our duty very seriously," Lawson said."We're honored to be nominated, but of course we'd like to win," she said. "I would encourage everyone when they get finished opening up presents next week to go and vote."Visit .vacelebrates.org to cast your ballot.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The News & Advance (Lynchburg, Va.)
