Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch, Va.迷利倉Nov. 13--Richmond Interim Superintendent Jonathan Lewis was beating a drum for the REB Awards for Teaching Excellence Tuesday, a day after 32 area public school teachers won $174,250 in grants in the annual program. Not beating the drum literally, anymore, like he once did, but still with effusive praise."I know it's a wonderful opportunity for the teachers who won, but there's more to it than that," he said.Years ago, when he was superintendent in the city of Poquoson, Lewis met a Hanover teacher who won an REB Award and used his grant to study drum techniques in the south Pacific. That teacher then shared his lessons not only with his students but with educators from across the state."I think we all went out and bought drums for our elementary schools," Lewis said. And that, Lewis said, is the power of the 25-year-old program, which has awarded $2.7 million in grants to 664 public schools teachers in central Virginia."It's like tossing a stone in a pond," he said. "It ripples out,and you never know how far it will reach."This year's winners came from a pool 146 teachers, who were nominated by students, parents and professional colleagues because of their effectiveness in the classroom and their passion for teaching. Seventeen teachers won grants with which to pursue non-traditional academic projects and goals. Fifteen finalists won $750 unrestricted cash grants."We are incredibly proud of the talented staff we have in our school division and through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. (Rudy and Esther) Bunzl, teachers walk away with tangible evidence of that pride and support," said Hanover County Superintendent Jamelle S. Wilson."The awards are truly a win-win, not only for the recipients seeking ways to strengthen the quality of their craft as educators, but for the students who will benefit from their teachers' experiences."In Henrico, which like Hanover had four winners, there was also excitement."These teachers have distinguished themselves with their classroom performance," said Deputy Superintendent Patrick Kinlaw. "We're quite proud of the imagination and energy that they put into their lessons every day. Not only do they inspire the students in their classrooms, but their creative passion spreads throughout their schools as well."The winners include: Ryan Abbott, Cosby High, Chesterfield($12,000) to study European nationalism and culture by attending the annual Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism conference at the London School of Economics and through an immersive travel experience in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.Susan Altieri, CoolSusan Altieri, Cool Spring Elementary, Hanover ($11,500) tocompare and contrast cultural elements such as art, language, customs, architecture, food and historical influences throughout a range of cities in Italy, Spain and Switzerland.Artice Appling, Manchester Middle, Chesterfield($9,500) totravel to New Zealand and Australia to investigate the use ofArtice Appling, Manchester Middle, Chesterfield ($9,500) to travel to New Zealand and Australia to investigate the use of technology as an integral part of teaching and learning, as well as explore historic and cultural sites.Helen Archer, Tucka- hoe Elementary, Henrico ($9,500) to take a children's literature tour of GreatHelen Archer, Tucka- hoe Elementary, Henrico ($9,500) to take a children's literature tour of Great Britain to visit the countryside, homes, parks and museums that inspired famous authors including Beatrix Potter, Roald Dahl, A.
