La Feria was up 14-0 at halftime of that one, but ended up losing 24-21.La Feria's secondary stuck to Grulla's receivers like glue, forcing Grulla quarterback Rey Penablanca into two interceptions on 5-of-14 passing. But in the end, Penalanca got the last laugh, as the dual-threat senior rushed for touchdowns of 19 and 38 yards in the Gators' second half comeback.Grulla's aggressive defense also played a major role, as it baited La Feria quarterback Eric Cuervo into a season-high three interceptions.Meanwhile in the Lower Valley, Raymondville (6-4) will meet No. 8 state-ranked Port Isabel (10-0) at Bobby Morrow Stadium in San Benito for a rematch of a weather-shortened Week Two win for the Tarpons. Port Isabel led 14-0 with four minutes left in the first half before a lightning sent both teams to the showers.It was a nasty, rainy day at Burnet Stadium, and Port Isabel embraced the elements in what was a dominating performance up to that point. The Tarpons had 186 total yards to Raymondville's 35 when the game was called.STARTING SOMETHING NEW: Santa Maria has never been a football town. For many years, the small 1A school, which is tucked away near the Rio Grande, had trouble getting enough kids to field a team.But things seem to be changing down in Cougar Town. Santa Maria (6-3) qualified for the playoffs for the second consecutive year. That's the first time the program has ever made back-to-back postseason trips.The next step is for the program is to get its first playoff win. First-year head coach Rolando Aguirre and his crew will get that chance on Friday when the Coogs take on Shiner at 7:30 p.m. at Calallen High School in Corpus Christi."I'm real happy with where we're at, and we're going to build on it," Aguirre said. "We'll self storageee what happens over there."Santa Maria's first trip to the playoffs (2008) ended swiftly with a 48-12 loss to Falls City in bi-district. Last year was much the same, as the Cougars were thumped by Three Rivers 68-6.This time Santa Maria gets the Comanches (6-3 overall, 3-1 in District 15-1A Division I), who made it all the way to the state semifinals last year and have won five of their last six games."That would mean a lot to me," running back Isai Garcia said about the possibility of bringing the school its first ever playoff win. "That would be amazing. I've been working hard to try and take this team far as far as possible. That would be history."ON TAPPS: Brownsville St. Joseph has as good a chance as its had in quite some time to advance past the first round of the playoffs.With a 24-21 win against San Antonio Central Catholic in their season finale, the Bloodhounds (6-4) secured a No. 3 seed. This means the Bloodhounds will play a neutral site game against a Houston school, rather then a true road game against a Dallas school, which would have happened had they lost to Central Catholic and gone in as the No. 4 seed."It's easier on our kids in terms of traveling," said head coach Christian Putegnat. "We don't have an 11 hour bus ride, followed by having to spend the night in a hotel and then another 11 hour bus ride after... Three hours is not too bad."The Bloodhounds will play Tomball Concordia Lutheran (5-5) Saturday at 2 p.m. in Beeville.This will be the first time St. Joseph's has gone in as a No. 3 seed since Putegnat took over five years ago. Putegnat, who's also an alum of St. Joseph, said he can't remember the last time they won a playoff game."It would be a huge step for the program (to win this game) because its been along time since we went to the second round," Putegnat said.
