The Ferrari 458 Speciale is a more extreme but still street-legal version of the successful 458 Italia.迷你倉 By Samuel EeLIKE the Ferrari 458 but find the Italia a bit docile and the track-only Challenge not quite your cup of cappuccino? How about the 458 Speciale? When Ferrari unveiled the 458 Italia in 2009, it was arguably the most stunning, modern, mid-engined model from the Italian supercar maker. Its sensuousness packed a naturally aspirated 4.5-litre V8 engine channelling 570 hp and 540 Nm to the rear wheels for a zero to 100 kmh time of 3.3 seconds. Now there is a faster 458 and it is called the Speciale. More hard-edged than the Italia, the Speciale shares the same lineage as other hardcore Prancing Horses like the 430 Scuderia Stradale and the 360 Challenge Stradale before it. Basically, it is lighter than the Italia with additional electronic refinements, plus of course, miscellaneous modifications to the engine and aerodynamics. With a dry weight of 1,290 kg, the 458 Speciale has managed to shed 90 kg with redesigned bodywork panels and thinner glass. The rear windscreen, for example, is now a polycarbonate panel. More carbon fibre has been used in the cabin and the racing seats with a four-point harness are lightweight. On the outside, Ferrari has patented "mobile aerodynamic solutions" in front and behind. At the front of the car, there are two vertical flaps in the centre and a horizontal flap below them. At low speeds, the vertical flaps are closed and channel air into the radiators to the engine. But above 170 kmh, the flaps open to reduce the amount of air flowing into the radiators, thereby cutting drag. And at speeds of over 220 kmh, the horizontal flap lowers to balance downforce between the front and rear axles. As for the rear flaps, they have two different confiself storageurations - raised for high downforce or lowered to minimise drag.Behind the driver, the V8's potential has been maximised. Now with 605 hp - up 35 hp - it is the most powerful naturally aspirated Ferrari eight-cylinder ever developed and shaves 0.3 seconds off the 0-100 kmh time to 3.0 seconds. Maximum torque is unchanged. At the same time, eight kg was slashed off the engine's overall weight just by redesigning the intake and exhaust systems. But the most significant changes have been reserved for the car's dynamics. The Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) is being introduced with the 458 Speciale and this sophisticated new software computes lateral acceleration, yaw angle, steering wheel angle and speed for an instantaneous analysis of the car's side slip angle. Torque management through traction control is optimised, and so is torque distribution between the two rear wheels through the E-Diff electronic differential. The result is smooth, controllable oversteer and maximum acceleration out of corners for a higher level of driver enjoyment.Complementing its abilities as a track-day toy, the Speciale can be ordered with an advanced telemetry system to record data from track sessions. For now, the estimated list price of this special-series 458 is $1.4 million on the road. The first deliveries should begin in the second quarter of next year but before that, a left-hand-drive display car will stop over at the Ital Auto showroom in mid-November for a few days before heading Down Under. Call it a Special appearance, if you will.samuelee@sph.com.sgSPECSFerrari 458 SpecialeEngine 4,497 cc V8Transmission 7-speed F1 dual clutchMax power 605 hp @ 9,000 rpmMax torque 540 Nm @ 6,000 rpm0-100 kmh 3.0 secs0-200 kmh 9.1 secsTop speed above 325 kmhCO2 emissions 275 g/kmDistributor Ital AutoTel 6475 1118迷利倉
