By SUN YE sunye@chinadaily.儲存com.cn h e World Tourism Cities Federation signed an agree- ment with Athens, the Greek capital, and Valletta, Malta’scapital, at the federation’s sec- ond summit on Thursday, in a bid to advance tourism cooperation, especially in the Chinese market. The move is based on the consensus of WTCF members that tourism is the key to sustainable devel- opment and cultural commu- nication.“We hope cities will make better use of the federation’splatform,” said Lu Yong, the federation’s secretary-general.“We will enlist the WTCF experts’ committee for advice in the member cities’ tourism development. We’ll also bring together companies across the countries to create synergies.”Athens is talking with sev- eral Chinese travel agencies regarding the design of travel itineraries that will appeal to the Chinese market.“Our hope is that Athens will be the gateway not only to Greece, but also to Europe, for both Chinese tourists and business people,” said Fotis Provatas, chairman of the Ath- ens City Council.“Both Greece and China are countries新蒲崗迷你倉with a long history.And Athens has a large Chi- nese community. We hope we can build up our relationship from there.”Valletta, which will be the European capital of culture in 2018, also hopes to have a closer relationship with China.With a series of cultural events leading up to 2018, the city will grab this opportunity to take its artists to China and vice-versa to boost cultural exchanges.“We want to take this chance to promote our ties with China,” said Valletta’sMayor Alexiei Dingli. “As the future capital city of culture in Europe, we also want to of er Beijing a platform to show (its culture) to other countries.”Valletta has already set up its own Chinese Culture Center.“Chinese travelers are espe- cially interested in historical sites, or those whose local his- tory relates to a larger global backdrop,” said He Sheng- kang, vice-manager at the China International Travel Service.“In this sense, although Athens and Valletta are com- paratively less popular with Chinese tourists than other cities, they’re ideal places for culture-minded tourists.”222mini storage
