Source: Cape Cod Times, Hyannis, Mass.mini storageSept. 07--SOUTH YARMOUTH -- Dennis-Yarmouth pulled off the shocker of Week 1 of the high school football season, putting a 37-9 nonleague spanking on 2012 Division 1 Super Bowl finalist Barnstable and thrilling the D-Y portion of the big Alan Carlsen Field crowd on Friday night. It was sweet revenge for the Dolphins, who, coming off a 2011 Super Bowl title, were handed a 55-14 pasting by Barnstable last season."We didn't mention that once," said D-Y head coach Paul Funk. "We've beaten (Barnstable) three of the last four years. We had one hiccup last year. This was just a great effort all around."No denying that. Senior quarterback Spencer Tyler served notice this will be his season, shredding Barnstable for 251 passing yards and two TDs and running for 118 yards, including a 50-yard score with 38 seconds left in the second quarter that sent D-Y to the locker room with a 23-7 lead.Tyler also said the coaches may not have mentioned last year, but to the players it was front and center."We used last year as motivation a lot," Tyler said. "In the locker room we talked about it. Even at halftime, we said we had to remember what they did to us last year. Use that as motivation not to let up in the second half."I knew it was going to be a battle tonight. But we worked hard in practice and all over the summer. We expected to win. We prepared to win."The Dolphins defense dominated Barnstable, not allowing an offensive point. Barnstable scored on a Derek Estes 47-yard interception return for a score in the second quarter to tie the game at 7, and was given a safety when backup QB Michael Dunn intentionally ran out of the end zone on fourth down with 5:08 left in the game to make it 37-9.It was a game of big plays for the Dolphins, one of the biggest coming on Barnstable's opening third-quarter drive. Red Raider senior quarterback Hayden Murphy broke free and streaked 29 yards, but Dunn stripped him from behind and senior linebacker L.K. Metz recovered at the D-Y 29. It was the punch to the gut that knocked Barnstable to the canvas, never to recover."We were starting to do what I feel we're capable of doing (before the fumble)," Barnstable coach Chris Whidden said. "This doesn't make me think we're a bad team. We just had a bad night. Hopefully this is our wakeup call."Murphy, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards iself storage 2012 from the halfback position, played quarterback Friday night. He was held to 28 yards on 13 carries and threw for only 48 yards while completing five of 11 passes and having one intercepted."I told them, everything we do is being re-evaluated," Whidden said. "Every kid who is playing certain positions is being reevaluated. (Hayden) is one of our leaders. We gave him the shot to take the reins. If that's what we think we need to do, he'll continue to do that. He's not the only one who didn't play great tonight. It's everyone involved, me included."Barnstable senior Justus Chaffee rushed for 118 yards on 13 carries.D-Y had a TD called back on the game's opening drive, the 31-yard scoring pass to Jake Pawlina nullified because of a chop block. The Dolphins punted, the defense forced a Barnstable punt, and on D-Y's next series Tyler connected with Mike Anderson for a 20-yard scoring play."It was big," Tyler said. "We need the momentum. When you get a call like that it puts you down a little bit but we just bounced back and got the touchdown back."Tyler called the pick six he threw early in the second quarter a "bad throw." The Dolphins came right back to get a 27-yard field goal from Drew Tardiff. After the D-Y defense forced yet another punt, Tyler hooked up with Pawlina on a 24-yard TD toss with 1:44 left in the half and a 16-7 lead.Barnstable went for it on fourth-and-9 from the D-Y 37, but Liam Matheson broke up the pass play.Tyler hit Anderson for 13 yards to midfield, and Tyler struck again, this time running 50 yards for a score and a 23-7 lead.Tyler went out with leg cramps in the third quarter, but backup Dunn came in and scrambled 55 yards for a touchdown and a 30-7 lead with 3:11 left in the third. A little over a minute later, after a Drew Smith fumble recovery, Cory Desimone ran 26 yards for another touchdown. Tardiff's fourth extra-point kick made it 37-7 with two minutes left in the third.Ballgame.It's only Week 1, but beating a Division 2 team will certainly boost Dennis-Yarmouth in the new playoff ratings, while losing to a Division 4 team will hurt Barnstable.D-Y is at Plymouth North next Friday in a game moved to 4 p.m. Barnstable has a bye next week.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Cape Cod Times (Hyannis, Mass.)
