Source: New Haven Register, Conn.迷你倉新蒲崗Aug. 11--NEW HAVEN -- Sometimes when you have an embarrassment of riches, the only thing to do is share the wealth. That's kind of the idea behind the New Haven Jazz Festival, which opens Monday with its expanded Jazz Week format for the second year in a row, culminating in Saturday's showcase concert on the Green, featuring the dynamic Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer Wayne Escoffery, who spent his youth in New Haven."Last year, we had about eight performances. This year, it's almost tripled to 25, all in New Haven restaurants and bars and venues," says Craig O'Connell, president and a director of Jazz Haven. Also on the bill for the Green concert are the eight-piece Zaccai Curtis & Insight with Natalie Fernandez, The Hawkins Jazz Collective, featuring drummer Gil Hawkins and the Neighborhood Music School Band. It's free, as are all the performances (except a Friday fundraiser), and starts at 4:30 p.m., with Escoffery on at 8.O'Connell, Doug Morrill, the founder and a director of Jazz Haven, and Glen Greenberg, a board member and owner of The Owl Shop, which presents jazz regularly on Tuesdays, chatted about the upcoming fest outside Greenberg's place on an unseasonably cool day last week.It was Greenberg who suggested the idea of expanding into some of the venues that already had a jazz following, "much like they do in other cities," he said. Morrill and O'Connell were thrilled enough with the success of last year's event to go bigger and better for 2013, curating a mix of names and local talent that, even with the loss of a few venues such as Olde School Saloon, is growing. Morrill says it's something "The City of New Haven wanted to do for years," because jazz demos show it's a good fit for an urban environment."It also fits in with Jazz Haven's mission to "promote the culture of jazz through unique collaborations with artists, schools and other groups.""Children are very open to jazz," says O'Connell, who teaches it to first-graders at St. Thomas's Day School. "They even dance to it."The lineup offers a cool fusion of all kinds of jazz, from Escoffery's straight-ahead jazz to the Latin-tinged fusion of Zaccai Curtis & Insight ("absolutely incredible," says Morrill) to the new sounds of electronica, such as what Alex Vishno has been experimenting with (10 p.m. Friday, Stella Blues, 204 Crown St.).The NMS orchestra is just as exciting to them, as it represents a whole new generation appreciating jazz, affirming their work of bringing jazz to a community of all ages. And the city comes through in a big way, all three emphasize, starting with the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism and ancillary services, provided by police, fire, EMT's, set-up of the Green stage and closing off Temple Street for food vendors. Sponsors for the fest include First Niagara Bank, M Fund, Shoreline Piano, Brandfon Honda, People's Medical, Yale University and the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.Morrill has known Escoffery since "before Jazz Haven was Jazz Haven," he says of the organization he founded in 1996, and which has run the festival since 2008. "He's not just a musician, he's just a super guy to work with."Like one of those sports prodigies that everyone wants to claim, Escoffery has made his mark in the tri-state area. After moving here from England, Escoffery and his mother settled in New Haven in 1986, where his music education began as a member of the Trinity Boys Choir, about the same time he started studying saxophone with Malcolm Dickinson. He attended the Neighborhood Music School and ACES Educational Center for the Arts and received a full scholarship to The Hartt School of the University of Hartford, from which he graduated summa cum laude. His career quickly took off, going from gigs at Rudy's Bar here to touring with Herbie Hancock."Like so many musicians, he's not just stuck in one thing. He's a composer and arranger ... he's very accomplished and has a high degree of respect in the jazz community," says Morrill.O'Connell adds that the range of talent among the local names "is incredible," starti迷你倉出租g with the students from NMS, who get them excited about the new generation of jazz musicians' ever-evolving approaches to the genre.Greenberg notes the growth of the Hawkins Jazz Collective, calling Josh Bruneau "an amazing trumpeter," who has played his venue and headlined New York's Smoke Jazz Club.Among the new venues hosting this year are Briq, Palmeira Brasil, Cave A Vin, Toad's Place, Kelly's Gastro Pub and Roia, which also hosts the equivalent of the post-wedding-day brunch, Aug. 18 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. with the Tony Lombardozzi Duo.There are multiple free events at multiple venues each night after Monday (Rohn Lawrence, 9-midnight at Toad's), with a special tribute fundraising event -- the only event with a ticket charge -- 7-9 p.m. Friday, An Evening with Giacomo Gates, featuring the local jazz great at Firehouse 12, 45 Crown St. ($30: .JazzHaven.org).Whether it's the festival or the opportunity for arts enrichment in the city, O'Connell says that of the "something like 2,500 kids with an instrument, more are now involved with some kind of jazz.""The same thing that Craig's trying to do with kids, the Monk Institute in L.A. does, working with 25 schools, and the class grades have gone up 25-30 percent ... There's a whole change of direction in public schools, and I'm blown away by it," Morrill says. While most of the performances are in bars, the restaurant venues will accept kids looking for their first taste of jazz. Also, this year's festival artist Andres Chaparro from Hartford, who helped launch the event on Aug. 1, will be doing a community jazz art work on the Green Saturday for kids to help create. His works will be exhibited around fest venues."What excites me is the potential to affect and expose young children and families to the culture of jazz. It's the music of freedom, a truly American genre," says O'Connell.Full week of musicHere's the lineup of free music:Monday: New Haven's Rohn Lawrence, 9 p.m., Toad's Place, 300 York St.;Tuesday: Neddy Smith Trio, 6-9 p.m., Palmeira Brasil, 55 Orange St.; Glenn Roth, 7-9:30 p.m., Briq, 266 College St.; Multi-instrumentalist Jack Edstein and his Trio, 8 p.m., Delaney's Taproom & Restaurant, 882 Whalley Ave.; The bluesy jazz of The Crown Street Orchestra, 9 p.m., The Owl Shop, 268 College St.; Nick Biello Trio, 9 and 11 p.m., 116 Crown, 116 Crown St.Wednesday: Mike Coppolla, "a nine-string acoustic guitarist, an extraordinary player who came highly recommended to us," says Morrill, 7 and 9 p.m., Roia, 261 College St.; The Hawkins Jazz Collective, 9 p.m., The Owl Shop; Tim Palmieri Trio, a local artist "who's been getting a lot of satellite radio play," says Owl Shop owner Glen Greenberg, Rudy's, 1227 Chapel St., 9 p.m.Thursday: Carl Testa of Firehouse 12 and his Trio, 7 p.m., Project Storefronts, 71 Orange St.; Mimosa, steel drum music, 7:30-9:30 p.m., Zafra, 259 Orange St.; Herb Wilson Quartet, 8 p.m., Geronimo Tequila Bar & Southwest Grill, 271 Crown St.; Matt Oestreicher Quartet, whose leader Craig O'Connell calls "another brilliant musician; he plays regularly at Jazz at the Apollo (in Harlem)," 8 p.m., Cafe Nine, 250 State St..Friday: An Evening with Giacomo Gates, 7-9 p.m., Firehouse 12, 45 Crown St., $30 (.JazzHaven.org); Jeff Fuller & Friends, 7:30 p.m., Sage American Grill and Oyster Bar, 100 S.
