Source: The Oregonian, Portland, Ore.迷你倉新蒲崗July 10--Need an excuse to visit Washington's Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride across Puget Sound from Seattle?Look no further than Saturday, July 20, when the Islanders stage their annual "Tour de Coop." You could do the tour on a bicycle, but cars are welcome, too. This tour actually has nothing to do with cycling, rather it is an Island open house invitation to visit the many fabulous chicken coops.Sounds like Portlanders who love their chickens should have a clucking good time.Unfortunately, this tour happens only once a year, so I missed it during my two recent visits to Bainbridge Island, in March then again in late June.I will be writing plenty more about the island in the coming weeks, especially about the new Bainbridge Island Art Museum, the public garden at Bloedel Reserve and the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial on Eagle Harbor.Bet that eagle could have made fast work of one of them chickens. So, to begin with, here's the poop, er, scoop, on the Island's annual Tour de Coop. This should be a lot more mellow than what I ran into in June: the annual Rotary Club Auction, when 10,000 Islanders gather at the schools along Sportsman Club Road to sell things that have sat unused in their garage for five years to other Islanders who put them in their garage for five years. It raises a lot of money for a good cause, but I wouldn't wish that traffic jam on anyone, not even on The Oregonian/OregonLive Hard Drive columnist Joe Rose.So here's how to fly the Bainbridge Island coop:Buy a ticket in advance at Bay Hay and Feed or Dana's Showhouse (the tour poster doesn't give the addresses, so I guess everyone knows where they are). They cost $8 for a cyclist, $10 for someone in a car or $30 for a carload of four. The ticket gets you a map and directions. Proceeds benefit Helpline House.Bay Hay and Feed is at 10355 N.E. Valley Road. Dana's Showhouse is at 194 Winslow Way E.The fifth annual self-guided tour runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 20. I bet it draws hordes of visitors from Seattle, many of whom have likely never seen a chicken.-- Terry RichardCopyright: ___ (c)2013 The Oregonian (Portland, Ore.)
